Tough Crackdown in Oran: Authorities Seize Hundreds of Items in Anti-Beach Exploitation Drive

Algiers, Algeria | July 4th, 2025 — The Wilaya of Oran has launched a forceful and ongoing campaign to combat all forms of illegal beach occupation, reaffirming the principle of free and unimpeded public access to the coastal spaces of the region.

In an official statement issued Friday, local authorities announced a series of decisive operations carried out in close coordination between the Governor’s Office, the National Gendarmerie, and the Directorate of Tourism. These efforts aim to dismantle unauthorized commercial exploitation of popular beaches during the summer season.

One of the most significant actions took place at Andalouses Beach, located in the commune of El Ançor, where authorities seized 262 chairs, 61 tables, and 47 parasols. This operation, conducted on Thursday, reflects a clear intent to eliminate private encroachment on public spaces.

The crackdown extended to Dunes de Sable Beach, where 168 chairs, 28 tables, and 6 parasols were confiscated. According to the communiqué, judicial proceedings have been initiated by the National Gendarmerie against those found to be in violation of the law.

A similar operation took place earlier this week at Madagh Beach in Boutlelis, resulting in the seizure of 110 chairs, 26 tables, and 21 parasols.

Moreover, in the beaches of the Aïn Turk district, a sweeping intervention on Monday led to the confiscation of 145 chairs, 40 tables, and 33 parasols, all used in unauthorized commercial activities that infringe on public beach access.

The statement stressed that these operations will continue throughout the entire summer season across all beaches under the jurisdiction of the Wilaya. The overarching objective is to ensure the comfort and safety of holidaymakers and to reinforce a culture of lawful, organized, and responsible use of Algeria’s coastline.
