Tourism in Algeria: From Exceptional Potential to a Strategic Economic Lever

Tourism today stands as a major strategic lever for the diversification of the national economy and the sustainable valorization of territories. Yet, its full realization depends on the effective mobilization of the necessary conditions for its implementation.
Algeria possesses undeniable assets: an extensive coastline, a historical and cultural heritage of remarkable richness, and a Saharan depth that is unique on a global scale. Sites such as Tipaza, Jijel, Béjaïa, as well as the Saharan regions of Djanet and Timimoun, and coastal hubs like Sidi Fredj, offer concrete illustrations of this structuring potential.
These advantages are further reinforced by notable historical achievements, particularly in the fields of tourism infrastructure and architecture, shaped in part by the legacy of Fernand Pouillon, alongside recognized expertise in complementary domains such as thermalism and traditional craftsmanship.
However, the assessment remains clear: while the potential is evident, its full valorization continues to fall short of expectations.
Within this context, the challenge no longer lies in identifying opportunities, but rather in the collective capacity to remove the constraints that hinder their realization. This requires a coordinated and resolutely operational approach.
In this regard, several key axes emerge as decisive. Strengthening the role of the State as a facilitator remains essential, particularly through the simplification of procedures, improved regulatory clarity, and enhanced intersectoral coordination. Encouraging private investment is equally critical, necessitating the establishment of a climate of trust, stability, and long-term visibility. Structuring the tourism offer must also be prioritized through the development of integrated circuits—cultural, Saharan, coastal, and thermal—while enhancing territorial specificities. Finally, promoting skills and service quality through training, professionalization, and the modernization of practices constitutes a fundamental pillar of this transformation.
From this perspective, emphasizing tourism development is not a matter of posture, but a strategic choice grounded in tangible economic realities.
Tourism indeed represents a direct source of job creation, a driver of territorial attractiveness, and a catalyst for related economic activities. It also serves as a powerful instrument for enhancing the country’s international image.
Accordingly, the question is no longer whether tourism should be elevated to a national priority, but rather how to define the concrete mechanisms capable of accelerating its transformation into a structuring economic engine.
Algeria possesses the foundations. The next phase demands rigorous, coordinated, and results-oriented execution.
Tourism is a serious matter… and yet, some still prefer to hold meetings to decide to do nothing.
