Towards a Digital Breakthrough: Algeria Launches National Agricultural Information System
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria has embarked on a decisive step to modernize its agricultural governance with the announcement of a new National Agricultural Information System, a reform described by Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine El Mahdi Oualid, as indispensable for ensuring data reliability and policy efficiency. Speaking in Algiers on Wednesday during a high-level meeting with the ministry’s senior officials, the minister drew a sharp line between credible governance and unreliable figures, warning that “partial truths are worse than lies.”
The initiative, he stressed, aims to establish a harmonized, nationwide database that will allow information to circulate seamlessly “from the grassroots to the central level,” thereby ensuring that agricultural strategies and decisions are grounded in precise, verified, and up-to-date figures.
No Room for Digital Delay
Oualid issued a firm warning against delays in the digital transformation of Algeria’s agricultural sector, underlining that the transition is not optional but a strategic necessity. While awaiting the full implementation of the system, he ordered local directorates to immediately mobilize available technological tools to track production outputs, monitor pricing trends, and make vital information accessible to citizens.
In a candid critique of existing shortcomings, the minister noted that basic issues such as internet connectivity still persist in some agricultural offices, undermining the very foundation of digitization. “We cannot speak of modernization if an agricultural official cannot even switch on his computer each morning to access updated data,” he stated. For Oualid, the personal commitment of executives is the true measure of progress: “An administrator who does not have a professional email or does not check it daily cannot be convinced of the digital transformation project.”
Calling for strict adherence to deadlines in the transmission of statistical data, the minister emphasized that timely, accurate information constitutes a cornerstone of the digital revolution in agriculture. “Information is the backbone of digitization, and respecting deadlines in data transmission is non-negotiable,” he declared.
