Algiers – December  2025 – Algeria has witnessed a key socio-economic development as trade unionists and experts welcomed the government’s decision to raise the National Guaranteed Minimum Wage (NGMW) from 20,000 DA to 24,000 DA, effective January 2026. The measure, announced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is viewed as a decisive step toward reinforcing citizens’ purchasing power and strengthening social stability.

Economic development expert and international consultant Abderrahmane Hadef told APS that the move falls squarely within the President’s social commitments, emphasizing that the upgraded NGMW—considered the reference wage in the national salary structure—will bring “tangible and positive repercussions on citizens’ social gains by strengthening purchasing power and improving their standard of living.”

Hadef highlighted that the increase carries not only a social dimension but also a significant economic one, given the direct link between purchasing power and the revival of domestic consumption, which he described as the principal driver of economic growth and the ultimate objective of national production. This renewed consumption is expected to support demand for locally manufactured goods and foster a favorable environment for investment. He added that the measure comes in reinforcement of other decisions, such as the exemption from the Global Income Tax (GIT) for salaries equal to or below 30,000 DA, which has helped improve disposable income for low- and middle-income earners.

From a consumer protection perspective, Mustapha Zebdi, President of the National Association for Consumer Protection and Guidance (APOCE), praised the “significant” increase, affirming that it will directly enhance citizens’ purchasing power. He commended President Tebboune’s sustained efforts to improve living standards through NGMW adjustments, wage revalorization, and strict instructions to ensure product availability and price control. Zebdi called for intensified efforts to preserve these gains by stabilizing prices, especially with the approach of the month of Ramadan.

In the education sector, the decision was also welcomed. Sadek Dziri, President of the National Union of Education and Training Personnel (UNPEF), described the NGMW increase as “a new gain for citizens,” highlighting its impact on low-income groups whose purchasing power will noticeably rise. Dziri stressed that such social measures strengthen national cohesion and ensure more dignified living conditions for workers.

The higher education community echoed similar sentiments. Messaoud Amarna, Secretary-General of the National Federation of Higher Education and Scientific Research (NFHESR), saluted what he called “an important achievement,” praising the President’s strong attention to the social dimension and the wellbeing of various social categories. Amarna recalled that the recently published special status for teacher-researchers, permanent researchers, and hospital-university staff includes additional salary increases that will “positively influence their professional performance.”

Likewise, Lounes Ghachi, Secretary-General of the Algerian Paramedical Union (APU), welcomed the NGMW increase, emphasizing its role in reinforcing employees’ purchasing power and improving their social conditions. He said the measure confirms the State’s continued commitment to fairness in the wage system and the protection of vulnerable workers.
