Transsaharan Gas Pipeline Confirmed to Pass Through Algeria, Affirms Nigerian Foreign Minister

ALGIERS- In a significant announcement, Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar confirmed on Monday in Algiers that the Transsaharan Gas Pipeline will indeed pass through Algeria. Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the 10th high-level seminar on security and peace in Africa, Tuggar emphasized the “significant and notable” progress achieved in the Algerian and Nigerian regions for the pipeline project.

Tuggar highlighted the strategic importance of Algeria and Nigeria as major gas-producing countries, emphasizing the critical energy needs of Europe. He expressed that the gas pipeline presents an “opportunity” for Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger to contribute to meeting Europe’s energy requirements.

This statement contradicts previous assertions by Moroccan officials who had claimed, on multiple occasions, that the gas pipeline connecting Nigeria to Europe would pass through Morocco. However, this proposal seemed impractical given the considerable distance between Morocco and Nigeria, not to mention the political complexities and instabilities in the regions the pipeline would traverse, including the Western Sahara.

The Transsaharan Gas Pipeline faces numerous challenges, including political uncertainties in the regions it will pass through and the need to navigate through turbulent areas such as the Sahara. Additionally, the extensive time required for such a project has been underscored by experts, estimating a minimum of fifteen years for completion. The current proposed route, passing through Niger before reaching Algeria, is already partially prepared, particularly in Algeria, which already has three pipelines supplying natural gas to Europe.
