UGTA Chief Calls for Unity of Ranks to Confront Current Socioeconomic Challenges

Amar Takdjout Urges Syndicalists to Reinforce National Cohesion and Workers’ Rights Amidst Strategic Mobilization and Regional Coordination

Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In an appeal for unity amid mounting socioeconomic pressures, Amar Takdjout, Secretary-General of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), called on Wednesday for the unification of union ranks as a strategic imperative to confront the pressing challenges facing Algeria’s workforce and national cohesion.

Speaking at a regional union coordination meeting held in Sétif, which brought together syndical leaders from 17 eastern wilayas, Takdjout emphasized that the UGTA must “fully reclaim its historic role as a force of proactive advocacy and national stability.”

“This is a time that demands solidarity, not fragmentation. We must rise above sectoral concerns to serve the broader interests of the Algerian worker and protect the unity of the nation,” declared Takdjout, underscoring the gravity of the moment. He stressed the urgency of building bridges of trust between unionists and workers, in order to cultivate a renewed climate of mutual commitment, accountability, and institutional loyalty.

Strategic Reorganization and Syndical Renewal

According to the organizers, the Sétif gathering was convened as part of a broader national effort to strengthen syndical coordination, harmonize perspectives on core professional and social issues, and evaluate local and regional union performance.

The meeting forms a critical pillar in the UGTA’s strategy to reinvigorate its internal organizational momentum, deepen interregional dialogue, and stimulate the engagement of skilled union cadres in the daily struggles of Algeria’s working class.

“We must revitalize our internal dynamism by motivating experienced syndical talents and fostering knowledge-sharing among generations of activists. The UGTA is not a static institution—it is a living force that must continuously adapt to the evolving realities of the labor world,” Takdjout asserted.

Toward a Pan-African and Arab Syndical Forum

In a significant announcement, Takdjout revealed plans to host an international seminar in October 2025, bringing together African and Arab trade union organizations. The gathering aims to facilitate high-level discussions on transnational labor issues, including workers’ rights, economic migration, trade union independence, and the global transformations shaping labor relations.

“The October forum will mark a critical step in elevating the UGTA’s international presence and building a common front of labor solidarity across the African and Arab worlds. It will be a platform to exchange best practices and reinforce our collective role in shaping policy debates regionally and globally,” he noted.

Upholding Syndical Values Amid Change

Reaffirming the union’s founding values, Takdjout urged all participants to adhere to the ethical and ideological principles of unionism, including integrity, responsibility, and a relentless commitment to justice. He emphasized that only through principled unity and organizational vigilance can Algeria’s national labor movement rise to meet the expectations of its constituents in an era marked by economic volatility and social transformation.
