UGTA Hails President Tebboune’s Bold Social Measures as a Pillar of National Cohesion and Socio-Economic Independence

Algiers – September 2025 – The General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) has voiced emphatic support for the social and economic measures recently unveiled by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscoring their decisive role in strengthening Algeria’s internal front, consolidating social justice, and reinforcing the country’s political and economic sovereignty.

Speaking at a high-level meeting in Zéralda on Tuesday, UGTA Secretary General Amar Takdjout praised the President’s announcements, which include significant salary increases, higher unemployment benefits, and expanded student grants starting in 2026, with the prospect of extending these reforms to pensions. “These are not mere adjustments,” declared Takdjout in remarks reported by Horizons. “They constitute a profound reaffirmation of the State’s unwavering commitment to protecting citizens’ purchasing power and consolidating Algeria’s social achievements.”

The union’s leadership also welcomed the President’s economic disclosures, highlighting declining inflation rates and a growing stock of foreign reserves as tangible indicators of Algeria’s steady recovery and resilience. For the UGTA, these developments reflect not only prudent economic governance but also a bold determination to build a productive economy liberated from the historical dependency on hydrocarbons—a trajectory that enhances both Algeria’s independence and its global standing.

In its final communiqué, the UGTA drew a striking parallel with its historic role during the War of Liberation, stressing that today, as in the past, Algerian workers remain mobilized to defend national stability and advance economic performance. “These decisions fortify the nation’s social cohesion and internal front in the face of global upheavals and the multifaceted threats encircling our country,” Takdjout affirmed.

Beyond its endorsement of government reforms, the UGTA used the gathering to critically examine its own performance and chart future priorities. Takdjout called for a radical restructuring of the Union’s internal functioning to avoid stagnation, insisting that “the stability of the UGTA and the integrity of its internal organization are now non-negotiable.” He urged a return to the Union’s founding principles of militancy and responsibility, alongside a reassessment of existing syndical laws—particularly Law 23-02 on trade union rights—to better align with Algeria’s historical labor legacy.

Financial transparency and efficient management of union assets were identified as urgent priorities. Delegates emphasized the need for modernized resource governance, rigorous accounting of the UGTA’s patrimony, and comprehensive union training programs tailored to the evolving needs of Algeria’s workforce.

Crucially, the UGTA reaffirmed its steadfast attachment to social dialogue as an “irreversible strategic choice,” arguing that institutionalized consultation between social partners remains the bedrock of industrial harmony, professional rights, and national unity. Recent legislative measures protecting mothers and children post-partum were hailed as a landmark achievement, further strengthening Algeria’s social protection framework.

Looking ahead, the UGTA urged the government to expand the scope of the 2026 salary increases to the broader economic sector while revising the national minimum wage (SNMG) as a tool of income regulation and a shield against erosion of living standards. Parallel calls were made for substantial pension revaluations to ensure that retirees share equally in the fruits of Algeria’s socio-economic progress.

In its concluding remarks, the UGTA reiterated its dual pledge: to rally behind President Tebboune’s social and economic agenda, and to reform its own structures with renewed vigor, ensuring that Algerian workers continue to serve as both the backbone of the economy and the guardians of the nation’s stability.
