UGTA Welcomes President Tebboune’s Decision to Raise the Minimum Wage and Retirement Pensions

Algiers – December 2025 – The General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) has welcomed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to increase the National Guaranteed Minimum Wage (NGMW), as well as retirement pensions and allowances, describing these steps as a decisive move toward strengthening social justice and addressing long-standing demands of the Algerian workforce.
In a statement to APS, Amar Takdjout, Secretary General of the UGTA, highlighted the President’s steadfast commitments toward workers and citizens. He emphasized the decision to raise the NGMW from 20,000 DA to 24,000 DA starting January 2026, along with the President’s instruction to submit proposals concerning the enhancement of retirement pensions and related allowances. For the country’s leading labor organization, these measures represent a concrete fulfillment of promises repeatedly expressed to Algerian workers.
Takdjout described the decisions—announced on Sunday during the Council of Ministers meeting—as “positive, responsible, and courageous,” noting that they reflect the clear implementation of President Tebboune’s commitments to workers and the wider population. He recalled that the UGTA has advocated for these measures on many occasions, making the President’s move a direct response to persistent socio-economic demands.
The Secretary General further stressed that these decisions will help strengthen the internal front, bolster the confidence of workers and citizens, and silence skeptics. He added that these “positive” measures come in addition to a series of similar decisions made in recent years by President Tebboune to address workers’ concerns within the country’s economic means—citing, as an example, the extension of maternity leave.
Regarding the forthcoming proposals on the revaluation of pensions and retirement allowances, Takdjout expressed hope that they will also include “positive measures” and “significant increases” to benefit retirees, reaffirming the UGTA’s commitment to defending the interests of all categories of workers.
