UN Calls for Immediate Investigation Following Deaths of Protesters in Morocco

Algiers – October 2025 – The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has urgently demanded a transparent and swift investigation into the deaths of three Moroccan citizens during the recent violent crackdown on nationwide protests.
In a strong statement, Guterres emphasized the need for immediate accountability for the excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators, expressing profound condemnation of the repression that has shaken the country. He underscored the primacy of the rule of law and the necessity of justice for both the victims and the injured, highlighting the gravity of the events that claimed three lives and left hundreds wounded.
The fatalities occurred amid demonstrations led by the grassroots movement “GenZ 212,” which has been mobilizing since last Friday to demand basic social rights, including access to education, healthcare, and the unimpeded freedom to protest peacefully.
The situation escalated dramatically on Wednesday night, with violent confrontations reported across multiple cities. Authorities documented 354 injuries, including 326 security personnel, and extensive material damage, encompassing 271 police vehicles, 175 private cars, and nearly 80 public and private facilities such as administrative offices, healthcare centers, banks, and commercial outlets across 23 provinces.
Following days of official silence, the Moroccan government issued a statement expressing willingness to engage in dialogue within institutional frameworks. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch declared that “dialogue remains the only path to address the pressing challenges facing Morocco.”
However, the GenZ 212 movement has rejected any negotiations with the government, reaffirming their demands in a virtual meeting conducted via Discord under the banner “The Message.” The group insists on systemic reforms and has called for the resignation of the government, citing its failure to address deficiencies in healthcare and education.
