Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2024 — In honor of World Environment Day, Unilever Algérie spearheaded a significant cleanup initiative at Canastel Forest “El Manzeh,” reflecting the company’s unwavering dedication to sustainable development and social responsibility.

Investing in Green Initiatives

In 2024, Unilever Algérie is heavily investing in environmental projects, such as installing solar panels and establishing a wastewater treatment facility at the Hassi Ameur factory. These initiatives are part of Unilever’s extensive strategy to minimize its ecological footprint and champion sustainable practices across its operations.

Returning to Canastel Forest eight years after planting 1,000 poplar trees, Unilever Algérie reinforces its enduring commitment to local ecosystem preservation. In partnership with the startup RASCALNI, responsible for waste processing, Unilever demonstrates a holistic approach to waste management and environmental stewardship.

The cleanup campaign emphasizes the importance of collaboration among businesses, citizens, and environmental organizations in preserving planetary health. Key partners in this initiative included the Oran Forest Conservation, the Director of Environment of Oranie and her team, the western branch of the National Waste Agency (AND), civil protection services, and the RASCALNI team.

Unilever employees, along with their families, actively participated in the cleanup, embodying a spirit of solidarity. This initiative aligns with the national fire prevention campaign led by the Ministry of Environment, encompassing intensified patrols, forest services surveillance, a halt in charcoal production, public awareness efforts, and comprehensive forest rehabilitation supported by the UNDP and the General Directorate of Forests (DGF).

“Protecting the environment is a priority for Unilever. We aim to promote sustainable practices and raise awareness about the importance of conserving our natural resources,” said Ali Becha, General Manager of Unilever Algérie. “This cleanup campaign not only celebrates World Environment Day but also showcases our commitment to preserving forests for future generations.”
