As Western Sahara Conflict Nears 50 Years, London Urges a Lasting UN-Led Solution Respecting International Law and Colonial Decolonization Principles

Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2025 — In a firm diplomatic stance that reaffirms its adherence to international law and the principles of the United Nations, the United Kingdom has officially reiterated its respect for the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people. The announcement comes amid renewed global attention on the Western Sahara issue as it nears five decades without resolution.

In a statement published on the official UK government website, London declared:

“As a member of the United Nations Security Council and a friend of the countries in the region, the United Kingdom’s position is to support a solution that is mutually acceptable and falls within the UN-led process, while respecting the principle of self-determination.”

The British government emphasized the importance of leveraging the symbolic timing of the approaching 50th anniversary of the conflict to bring about a decisive breakthrough:

“With the fiftieth anniversary of the conflict approaching, it is imperative to seize this moment to reach a durable solution that ensures a better future for the people of Western Sahara.”

The UK’s declaration marks a significant reaffirmation of the international community’s legal and moral responsibility toward the people of Western Sahara—an issue long regarded as the last unresolved decolonization question on the African continent.

The Western Sahara conflict remains a deeply entrenched colonial legacy, with the Sahrawi people, represented by the Polisario Front, continuously calling for a referendum on self-determination as mandated by numerous UN resolutions. Meanwhile, Morocco’s ongoing occupation of large parts of the territory and its settlement policies have drawn widespread criticism from human rights organizations and international legal scholars.
