US Ambassador Showcases Expanding Algeria–US Partnership Across Defense, Energy, Economy, and Education, While Addressing Gaza and Western Sahara

Algiers, Algeria |  In a wide-ranging press conference held at the US Embassy in Algiers, Ambassador Elizabeth Moore Aubin underscored the growing breadth of Algerian–American relations, spanning diplomacy, defense, energy, investment, and education. While carefully diplomatic in tone, her remarks touched on highly sensitive issues, including the war in Gaza and the Western Sahara question, while also highlighting new areas of cooperation such as shale gas exploration, civil aviation, agriculture, and cultural exchange.

Strategic and Military Cooperation

Ambassador Aubin emphasized that military ties between Algeria and the United States are longstanding and steadily expanding. She cited the memorandum of understanding signed in January between US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander General Michael Langley and Algerian Army Chief of Staff General Saïd Chengriha, framing it as a reinforcement of a “shared vision for regional stability.”

She further pointed to concrete examples of cooperation, including the visit of the USS Sherman destroyer to Algeria, the aviation safety program linking Boufarik and Ramdane Slimane air bases, and Algeria’s unprecedented participation in the AFRICOM leadership changeover ceremony in Stuttgart, where Algerian officials held discussions with top American generals.

Gaza and the Palestinian Question

When pressed by Algerian journalists on Washington’s controversial stance regarding the war in Gaza and its steadfast support for Israel, Ambassador Aubin acknowledged the deep frustration among Algerians. Her response was notably restrained: the United States, she said, “works with Algeria to advance peace and alleviate Palestinian suffering,” reiterating “Washington’s commitment to humanitarian aid deliveries.”

She added that Washington is pushing for “the release of hostages, an end to Hamas’s rule and threats to Israel, ‘as she claimed,’ and the continuation of humanitarian assistance,” stressing that the US and Algeria are engaged in “frank dialogue” on the issue.

Western Sahara Dispute

On Western Sahara, Aubin acknowledged the protracted nature of the conflict, describing it as a dispute stretching back over half a century with significant human impact. She noted that the United States continues to advocate for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, calling on “all parties to engage in dialogue and negotiations to reach a lasting, mutually acceptable solution.”

Energy and Shale Gas Exploration

Energy cooperation occupied a prominent place in her briefing. The ambassador confirmed that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has met with senior executives from Chevron and ExxonMobil to discuss shale gas opportunities. While avoiding specifics, Aubin said that US companies bring “cutting-edge technological solutions” and employ Algerian workers, emphasizing Washington’s enthusiasm for deepening its energy partnership with Algeria.

She also stressed America’s interest in supporting Algeria’s broader energy transition and diversification strategy, particularly through renewable energy projects and technological innovation.

Economic Ties and Investment

According to Aubin, the United States accounts for nearly 29% of foreign direct investment in Algeria, with more than 100 American firms active across diverse sectors. She praised Algeria’s strong presence at the 2025 SelectUSA Investment Summit, where it fielded the largest delegation from North Africa, framing this as evidence of a “robust appetite” for stronger trade and investment relations.

Air Connectivity

One of the ambassador’s personal priorities, she revealed, is establishing a direct air route between Algiers and New York. Far more than a logistical project, Aubin described it as a “gateway for deeper economic, cultural, and tourism exchanges” between the two nations, pledging to “continue working and pressing until it becomes reality.”

Agriculture and Food Security

In a lighter yet symbolically significant note, Aubin celebrated the birth of the first calf under a major dairy partnership with US firm Vermont. She recalled that Algeria signed import permits for American cattle and genetic material, with the first calf born during Eid al-Fitr at a farm in Mila province. She hailed this as a “good-news story” emblematic of the potential of bilateral agricultural cooperation.

Education and English Language

Finally, the ambassador expressed admiration for Algerians’ growing enthusiasm for English. She highlighted five American-run schools offering free English instruction across the country and revealed an ongoing program to train Algerian officials in the language. Such efforts, she said, will enhance Algeria’s international engagement and bolster bilateral exchanges.
