Algiers, Algeria | June 15th, 2025 — nIn a candid and forward-looking interview with Echorouk News, Juan Riera, President of the Council of Chambers of Commerce for Spain’s Valencian Community, declared that Algeria represents the future of investment for Spanish companies—especially those aiming for sustainable production and entry into African markets. Speaking on the sidelines of the Algerian-Spanish Economic Forum held on Sunday at the Marriott Hotel in Algiers, Riera underscored that the economic fallout from recent bilateral tensions has been devastating, but the time has now come to rebuild through strategic, locally rooted partnerships.

“The economic and trade crisis between Algeria and Spain in recent years had a tremendously damaging impact, particularly for the companies in our region,” Riera stated, noting that some firms experienced an export turnover drop of nearly 70%, with overall trade activity declining by 85 to 90%. Despite this, he insisted that the reopening of trade channels presents a rare and powerful opportunity to establish a new, mutually beneficial model of economic cooperation.

According to Riera, the “new rules of the game” demand a shift away from traditional export-only models toward direct investment in Algeria. He explained that local production is now essential, emphasizing that the Algerian government has created a fertile environment for foreign investment by offering robust legal frameworks, financial facilities, and institutional support.

“Our companies must look for reliable partners and tailor-made products for export, but more importantly, we need to invest and manufacture within Algeria,” he said. This approach, Riera continued, is the only path toward ensuring both sustainability and access to Africa’s immense and growing markets, especially in sub-Saharan regions.

The Valencian Community, which includes the provinces of Valencia, Castellón, and Alicante, has long maintained strong economic ties with Algeria. For Riera, restoring and expanding those ties through on-site manufacturing and joint ventures is the key to long-term recovery and growth.

Algeria, he argued, offers a compelling advantage in terms of production costs. “It’s about energy prices—electricity, gas, and fuel—which are extremely competitive, and the availability of a skilled yet affordable workforce,” he said. These conditions, he added, provide a solid base for companies to launch production hubs that not only serve Algerian consumers but also act as gateways to the African continent.

During his address at the forum, Riera reaffirmed the Spanish private sector’s readiness to commit to the Algerian market, provided there are guarantees in terms of legal, economic, and financial protection. “If such a climate of trust is ensured,” he added, “Spanish firms will have no hesitation in investing in local production, with a clear objective of targeting the southern markets.”

The event—organized by the Algerian-Spanish Business and Industry Club—also featured presentations from high-ranking Algerian officials, including Salhiha Nasri, a representative of the Minister of Environment. Nasri outlined significant investment prospects in Algeria’s tourism sector, citing ongoing structural reforms and development plans.

Meanwhile, a delegate from the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency detailed the full array of incentives for foreign investors, including streamlined procedures, industrial land access, and new partnership frameworks.

The three-day forum, running until Tuesday, June 17, includes B2B meetings, field visits to major Algerian firms, and discussions on cooperation in key sectors such as automotive manufacturing, logistics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, tourism, and more.

With trust being cautiously rebuilt and frameworks redefined, both sides now stand on the threshold of a new era. If momentum is maintained and commitments honored, Algeria could indeed emerge as a strategic investment frontier for Spain, redefining Mediterranean economic cooperation for the next decade.
