Vietnam–Algeria Coffee Diplomacy: Trade Expansion Anchored in Industrial Ambitions

By Dr. Hana Saada

In a calibrated step reflecting the evolving contours of Algeria’s external economic engagements, Vietnam has moved to consolidate its position within the Algerian coffee market through a targeted institutional outreach. The recent working visit of the Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria, Trân Quôc Khanh, to NTH Agro—an enterprise specialized in coffee processing—signals a deliberate effort to strengthen export flows while exploring broader avenues of cooperation.

This initiative unfolds within a framework of economic complementarity. Vietnam stands among the world’s leading coffee producers, while Algeria represents a stable and expanding consumer market. The convergence of these two dynamics lends strategic weight to the relationship, positioning coffee as a conduit for deeper commercial and industrial interaction rather than a mere commodity exchange.

Discussions held with NTH Agro’s leadership underscored a shift in orientation. The emphasis was placed on fostering mutually beneficial arrangements that extend beyond traditional import-export patterns. The prospect of developing local transformation capacities in Algeria—supported by Vietnamese expertise—emerges as a central theme. Such an approach carries implications for value creation within the Algerian economy, encompassing investment flows, technical knowledge transfer, and the gradual establishment of integrated production chains.

A notable element raised during the exchanges concerns the potential establishment of a preferential trade mechanism between the two countries. Should this framework materialize, it could streamline market access by reducing tariff and logistical constraints. This, in turn, may facilitate increased volumes of Vietnamese coffee exports while simultaneously opening channels for Algerian products to penetrate Southeast Asian markets.
