“We Will Be More Active”: Azzouz Nasri Commits to a Revitalized and Transparent Upper House

New Speaker of the Council of the Nation Launches the 10th Legislature with Strong Institutional Reforms and a Call for Renewed Parliamentary Dynamism

Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In an address marking a new chapter for Algeria’s upper house of Parliament, Azzouz Nasri, the newly elected Speaker of the Council of the Nation, announced on Wednesday that the institution will operate with greater dynamism, transparency, and inclusivity in the upcoming legislative term. Speaking during a plenary session devoted to the installation of parliamentary structures for the 10th Legislature (2025–2027), Nasri made a firm commitment: “We will be more active than we have ever been.”

The session, held in Algiers, marked a significant turning point as it followed the partial renewal of the Council’s membership, which included the swearing-in of newly elected and appointed senators and the election of Nasri as Speaker. It also witnessed the official launch of the new parliamentary group of the Front El Moustakbal, headed by Issam Nechma.

During the session, Nasri emphasized that the installation of internal bodies and structures—including permanent commissions, parliamentary reporters, observers, vice-speakers, and group representatives—is essential for ensuring the chamber’s legislative and oversight functions are carried out effectively. He commended the political parties for their responsible and transparent conduct in the internal elections, which he said “enshrines democratic practice within the institution.”

Nasri underscored that full institutional transparency is non-negotiable: “All data concerning the Council of the Nation must be made public, because this prestigious body cannot function without absolute transparency,” he declared. Reaffirming his openness to dialogue, he added: “The doors of the Speaker’s office are open to everyone. I am committed to considering all suggestions and observations that enhance the status and performance of this institution.”

Tribute to Salah Goudjil

In a poignant moment, the session included a heartfelt tribute to the former Speaker of the Council, Salah Goudjil. Nasri acknowledged Goudjil’s unwavering dedication, moral rigor, and his consistent call for a strong sense of statehood and institutional integrity:

“Salah Goudjil always reminded us of the necessity of a culture of the state and ethical leadership. His recent recognition by the President of the Republic is a profound gesture that affirms the state’s respect for all who serve it, regardless of their rank.”

Nasri also highlighted Goudjil’s embodiment of the revolutionary spirit: “He carried within him the immortal message of November, the legacy of the moudjahidine, and the image of a victorious Algeria.”

Reforms and Legislative Agenda Ahead

Concluding the session, Nasri announced that the new Bureau of the Council of the Nation will be convened immediately, and that vice-speakers will oversee the installation of the standing committees. He reminded members that a demanding and ambitious legislative agenda lies ahead, which includes the review, approval, and monitoring of government actions and the consideration of several major laws.

“There is a tremendous amount of work waiting for us. We must rise to the expectations of the Algerian people. We will be more active than we were in the past,” he pledged.
