𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – As diplomatic corridors buzz from Madrid to Washington, one geopolitical reality is becoming increasingly clear: no resolution to the Western Sahara conflict will succeed without Algeria’s approval. Recent discreet exchanges, including discussions at the U.S. embassy in Spain, reinforce what seasoned observers have long recognized—Algiers is not merely a regional player, but the linchpin of future stability in the Maghreb.

The Weight of Principled Diplomacy

Rooted in a liberation struggle that continues to shape its national identity, Algeria pursues a steadfast diplomacy that commands respect. Far from opportunistic bargaining, it embodies a principled approach to international law, placing the inalienable right of peoples to self-determination above temporary geopolitical interests.

Today, as in the past, Algeria does not simply advocate for principles—it embodies them. This moral authority, combined with significant geostrategic influence, compels major powers to acknowledge its central role.

Washington Confronts Multilateral Realities

Even the United States is adjusting to this reality. Recently, Massad Boulos, U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, reiterated Washington’s commitment to a “just, durable, and mutually acceptable” solution via the X platform. Beneath this seemingly diplomatic phrasing lies a profound acknowledgment: by emphasizing “mutual acceptability,” the U.S. implicitly recognizes Algeria as a decisive stakeholder. The unilateral imposition of Morocco’s autonomy plan will go nowhere. More importantly, this represents a pragmatic return to multilateral logic after the Trump-era recognition of Moroccan sovereignty, reaffirming Algeria’s weight in shaping any viable solution.

Self-Determination: A Non-Negotiable Principle

At the heart of Algeria’s firm stance is a historical conviction: the Sahara belongs to the Sahrawi people. For Algiers, the issue is neither influence nor territorial bargaining—it is the recognition of a fundamental right. This principle, non-negotiable and consistent since 1962, is the backbone of Algeria’s foreign policy.

Any solution that ignores this reality is destined to fail. Algeria does not negotiate the right of peoples; it negotiates the conditions for its respect. By insisting that any agreement be “mutually acceptable,” the international community—including Washington—implicitly validates Algeria’s red line.
