Western Sahara as a Global Cause of Liberation: Diplomatic Awareness and Cinema Shaping International Consciousness
By Faouzi Saïdani
Translated by Dr. Hana Saada
Today, Western Sahara has emerged as a central axis of global diplomatic contestation, transcending its characterization as a regional dispute to embody a living paradigm of a people’s struggle for liberation and dignity. This transformation places the international community before a genuine test of the capacity of global institutions to uphold the fundamental right of peoples to freedom and independence.
The issue has garnered sustained attention from states, civil society organizations, and international media outlets, reflecting growing momentum that elevates discussions beyond conventional political frameworks to encompass human rights and national self-determination.
The contemporary global generation places a high premium on the principles of freedom and sovereignty, honoring liberation movements as authentic expressions of peoples’ will to determine their own destinies. These struggles are increasingly perceived as vehicles for international solidarity and open human rights dialogue.
Within the African continent, the membership of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in the African Union since 1984 constitutes a historical recognition of its political standing. It is widely regarded as a symbol of resistance against colonialism, embedding the Sahrawi cause within the broader legacy of African liberation movements.
In Latin America, early and sustained support has extended beyond governmental positions to encompass popular and cultural initiatives, including forums and solidarity festivals dedicated to the Sahrawi people. These expressions reflect a generational alignment with the values of justice and freedom.
In June 1997, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, warned of the risks posed by continued stagnation for the Sahrawi people, emphasizing that future generations would inevitably rise to defend their freedom and their children. This statement reflects an early international awareness of the importance of supporting liberation movements and underscores the global shift toward prioritizing human rights and freedom, placing the Western Sahara issue at the forefront of international concern.
International support has not been confined to political spheres; it has also extended into the arts and cinema, which have played a pivotal role in conveying the issue to global audiences. Cinematic works addressing Western Sahara include Yaqadha by Turkish director Renim Aziz, Storiana by Italian filmmaker Garini Mantalio, The Dunes by Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Rebki, and A Voice from Western Sahara by Algerian director Faouzi Saïdani, which bridges historical memory with contemporary struggle. These productions have opened new channels for global awareness, functioning as symbolic instruments that stimulate international solidarity with the Sahrawi people.
The international arena has also witnessed tangible indicators of sympathy toward the Sahrawi cause. Among these are the raising of the Sahrawi flag in stadiums across France, Italy, and Switzerland without official objection, as well as documentary exhibitions and visual displays in Japan highlighting the experiences of the Sahrawi people. Such gestures reflect a growing global recognition of their situation and rights.
Moreover, students from Western Sahara are received in countries such as Canada and Australia under their original identities and treated as international students—an indication of practical acknowledgment of their right to education and freedom. These developments collectively illustrate a generational commitment to the values of liberty and independence, reinforcing the global presence of the Sahrawi cause.
International media continues to play a decisive role in sustaining the issue within global discourse, providing real-time coverage and raising rights-based questions at the international level. In doing so, it transforms the issue from a closed political dispute into a broader matter of human rights and freedom, placing the international community before a clear responsibility to support contemporary liberation movements.
Ultimately, the Western Sahara issue today transcends its geographical dimensions to become a global symbol of liberation and human dignity. Through African and Latin American support, cultural and artistic expression, and sustained international media attention, it stands as a living embodiment of peoples’ aspirations for freedom and independence. The current global generation, deeply committed to these values, elevates the issue into a civilizational cause that commands international respect, positioning it among the most prominent liberation struggles of the twenty-first century.
