Western Sahara: Franco-Moroccan Conspiracy to Bury the Referendum

Algiers – September 2025 – A damning investigation has once again unmasked the colonial collusion between Paris and Rabat, exposing a joint scheme designed to obliterate the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. Behind closed doors, France and Morocco are drafting a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would reconfigure MINURSO, not as a guarantor of the referendum long promised, but as an instrument to launder Morocco’s illegal occupation and bury the Sahrawi cause once and for all.
This is no diplomatic accident; it is the continuation of a sordid history of French duplicity in North Africa. Far from being a neutral player, Paris has consistently acted as the patron of Moroccan colonialism in Western Sahara. The current French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, is said to be working hand in glove with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, even coordinating with UN envoy Staffan de Mistura to prepare the ground for what they cynically call a “realistic solution.”
In the language of colonial powers, “realistic” means nothing less than the imposition of Morocco’s so-called “autonomy plan,” in blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice. The United States, unsurprisingly, complements this design with pressure and political cover. Massad Boulos, advisor to Donald Trump, declared earlier this month that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only solution.” Such pronouncements reveal the depth of the conspiracy: powerful states dictating to colonized peoples what their future should be, trampling the principle of self-determination that is supposed to be the cornerstone of the post-colonial world order.
France’s role is particularly pernicious. Since Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Rabat in 2024, Paris has been quietly redrafting an “amended autonomy plan,” a grotesque diplomatic masquerade to give colonial annexation a pseudo-legal dressing. To sweeten the poison, Paris pressures Rabat into cosmetic gestures—a potential release of a handful of Sahrawi political prisoners, including some of the emblematic detainees of Gdeim Izik. This, however, is a crude attempt to distract from the grim reality: hundreds of Sahrawis remain imprisoned, tortured, and tried in sham courts for daring to demand freedom.
The scheme is transparent: erase the referendum, rebrand occupation as autonomy, transform MINURSO into a colonial fig leaf, and reduce the Sahrawi people to a “local minority” on their own ancestral land. Yet, despite this elaborate plot, one fact remains immovable: Western Sahara is recognized by the United Nations as a non-self-governing territory, awaiting decolonization. No Franco-Moroccan pact, no American diktat, and no diplomatic smokescreen can erase this legal and moral truth.
Against this backdrop, Algeria’s position stands as an immovable bulwark. Firm in principle and unwavering in commitment, Algiers refuses to legitimize this neocolonial farce. The Franco-Moroccan scheme may twist the corridors of diplomacy, but it cannot bend the will of a people nor rewrite international legality.
The truth is stark and undeniable: the only just and legal solution is the immediate organization of a free and fair referendum of self-determination, in line with UN commitments. Anything else is complicity in colonialism, a betrayal of justice, and an affront to the dignity of the Sahrawi people.
