Western Sahara: Ghali Stands Firm Against De Mistura – No Compromise on Self-Determination

Algiers – September 2025 – Brahim Ghali, President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, delivered an uncompromising message to the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.
In his meeting with De Mistura at the Sahrawi Presidency, Ghali reaffirmed the Polisario’s unwavering stance: any so-called “solution” that disregards the sovereign will of the Sahrawi people is null and void. The only acceptable outcome remains a UN- and African Union-supervised referendum on self-determination, the sole pathway to ending Africa’s last colonial question. This right, Ghali emphasized, is enshrined in the UN Charter, international resolutions, and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
He warned of the grave consequences of the reckless course pursued by the Moroccan regime, emboldened by its Western patrons. France, Spain, and the United States, he charged, bear both historic and current responsibility for perpetuating this illegal colonial occupation. By shielding Morocco diplomatically, supplying it militarily, and obstructing international pressure, these powers are complicit in undermining peace and justice.
France continues to arm and shield Rabat at the Security Council; Spain has openly betrayed international law by endorsing Morocco’s so-called “autonomy plan”; and the United States manipulates the issue to serve its own geopolitical agendas. Yet, the Sahrawi people remain resolute: they will never accept a solution imposed from abroad.
“The only path to a just and lasting peace lies in upholding the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence,” Ghali declared. “Any attempt to bypass this principle is doomed to failure and will only fuel instability across the Maghreb and the Sahel.”
The Polisario Front has, once again, called on the United Nations to break its inertia and compel MINURSO to finally fulfill its original mandate: the organization, without delay, of a free and democratic referendum. The decolonization of Western Sahara, Ghali reminded, is not only a legal obligation but a moral imperative the international community can no longer evade.
