Western Sahara: Representative of Polisario Front at UN holds consultations with Staffan de Mistura in New York

ALGIERS (SPS) – The member of the National Secretariat, representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, held unofficial bilateral consultations with Mr. Staffan de Mistura, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Western Sahara, at the headquarters of the United Nations General Secretariat in New York

The consultations dealt with the United Nations-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara. In this vein, the representative of the Polisario Front in the United Nations and the coordinator with MINURSO reaffirmed to the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General the position of the Front regarding this issue.

He also stressed that a peaceful, just and lasting solution to the issue of decolonization of Western Sahara can only be achieved on the basis of full respect for the inalienable and non-compromising right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations had stated, early this week, that the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara will hold unofficial bilateral consultations with representatives in New York of both parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front, Morocco and the two neighboring countries, Algeria and Mauritania, as well as members of the ” Group of Friends of Western Sahara.

According to the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara expressed his hope for the possibility of reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that guarantees self-determination for the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.
