When Sacred Symbols Are Desecrated: Kaaba’s Kiswah in Epstein Files… A Question of Ethics Before Politics – By Moussa Boughrab

Not all scandals are created equal; some shake politics, others expose wealth, and the most dangerous are those that touch the sacred.

Among the revelations in the files released by the U.S. Department of Justice in the Jeffrey Epstein case, shocking accounts have emerged that strike at the conscience of Arabs and Muslims alike, extending beyond individual criminality to question values and meaning.

According to these files, Epstein possessed three pieces of the Kaaba’s sacred Kiswah: one reportedly taken from the interior of the Kaaba, another from the exterior covering, and a third crafted but never used.

The narratives suggest that these pieces reached him through a businesswoman, though her identity remains contested—some sources claim she is Emirati, while others insist she is Saudi—without any official clarification or conclusive account. This ambiguity raises a profound ethical question: why was the Kiswah, a symbol of such sanctity, sent in the first place? And what was the intent of delivering a religious emblem of this magnitude to a man whose name is entwined with the vilest moral crimes?

The Kiswah is not merely black fabric embroidered with gold; it is the spiritual memory of billions of Muslims. Around it, sectarian divisions dissolve, and over 1.5 billion people circumambulate in reverence, carrying their prayers, tears, and hopes across seven circuits. Every touch, every gaze, is a silent covenant between the servant and the Divine.

How, then, could such a symbol become a “collectible” in the possession of a man associated with exploitation, blackmail, and moral depravity?

This is not merely a matter of procedural breach or administrative oversight; it is the objectification of the sacred, a moment in which money and influence were intermingled to render everything commodifiable—even that which should never be sold.

If these accounts are accurate, the question should not stop at: how did the Kiswah arrive there? It must extend to: who permitted it? Who remained silent? How was the door to the sacred opened to one with no reverence?

The most alarming aspect of this story is not Epstein alone; he is, in the end, a product of a global network of protection and complicity. More concerning is the willingness of certain elites to normalize the desecration of symbols, justifying it through prestige, connections, or “charitable work.”

When the sacred is stripped from symbols, every ethical boundary is removed.

Some may argue: “These are merely documents and accounts.” Yes, but even before any legal judgment, these documents are morally condemnable, as they reveal a mindset that views the holiest of Muslim sacred objects as mere decor or a tool of influence.

In an age of major scandals, silence becomes complicity, and indifference becomes collusion.

The Epstein case is no longer the story of a deviant individual; it is a mirror reflecting a world without ethical limits—a world that approaches everything… even the Kaaba.
