When Streets Forget Their Heroes: Zionist Names Replace Symbols of Moroccan Resistance

From banning Islamic rituals to glorifying Zionist figures, the Moroccan regime under Mohammed VI pushes a perilous agenda that threatens national identity and panders to the Zionist entity at the expense of Arab-Islamic heritage.

Algiers, Algeria | June 11th, 2025 — In a move that has stirred outrage and disbelief across the Arab world, the Moroccan regime appears to be accelerating its systematic drift toward full-fledged Zionist normalization — not just in foreign policy but in the very fabric of its national identity. As the palace tightens its alliance with the Zionist entity, Moroccans now face the terrifying possibility of awakening one day to schools named after Netanyahu, streets glorifying Ben Gvir, and even mosques bearing the names of infamous Zionist figures like Golda Meir.

This dystopian trajectory is no longer a matter of speculation but one unfolding in plain sight. The regime’s recent decision to ban the religious ritual of sheep slaughter during Eid al-Adha — a central Islamic practice — has triggered widespread fury. While the monarchy claimed logistical reasons tied to livestock shortages, the timing and ferocity of the enforcement suggest a deeper, more insidious motive: a direct attack on Islamic traditions to pave the way for Zionist cultural infiltration.

Indeed, the real battle is being waged at the level of symbols and memory. The so-called Moroccan Human Rights Institute in Agadir, operating with clear backing from the regime’s security apparatus, has formally requested that public spaces across Morocco be renamed after Zionist-aligned Jewish Moroccan figures. This move, supported by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, who also serves as mayor of Agadir, represents a bold escalation of Morocco’s cultural reengineering. The letter, provocatively written in French, betrays not only a disdain for Arabic but also a colonial mindset that aligns perfectly with Zionist values.

Among the shocking proposals: replacing the name of Moroccan nationalist icon Allal al-Fassi with Simon Levy, a Jewish figure whose ideological commitments starkly contrast with the legacy of Arab-Islamic resistance. Worse still, the name of the revered Arab leader Abderrahim Bouabid is being targeted for substitution with that of Rabbi Khalifa Ben Malka — a symbol of absolute loyalty to the Zionist cause.

The brazenness of this plan cannot be overstated. It is not simply a question of pluralism or historical inclusion. It is a direct, deliberate attempt to erase Arab-Islamic legacies from public consciousness and replace them with Zionist-friendly figures whose allegiance lies far from Morocco. This rebranding of the national landscape is part of a larger, meticulously coordinated Zionist scheme — a full-spectrum campaign to “Judaize” Moroccan identity in preparation for what some see as an alternative homeland for Jews should the Zionist project in Palestine falter.

The regime’s relentless crackdown on Islamic rites — particularly the Eid sacrifice ban enforced with police raids, livestock seizures, and arrests — is not a standalone event. It forms part of a wider Zionist-aligned strategy to suppress Islam while promoting a Zionist cultural ethos. Even the Moroccan Constitution has been amended to exalt the so-called “Hebraic tributary” as a primary component of national identity — a move unilaterally imposed without public debate or democratic legitimacy.

This campaign has manifested in the formation of multiple Zionist-linked institutions, including the Council of the Moroccan Jewish Community, the Foundation for Moroccan Jewish Religion, and the House of Jewish Law. These bodies, many formed under royal patronage, are now tasked with spreading Zionist religious and cultural symbols across Moroccan soil — including plans to turn Ifrane into a so-called “Little Jerusalem.”

The implications are grave. What is at stake is not merely symbolism but sovereignty itself. Morocco risks becoming a proxy state, a Zionist satellite governed by unelected elites beholden to Tel Aviv rather than the will of its Muslim Arab people. With every renamed street, every banned Islamic practice, and every new Zionist institution, the regime moves closer to handing over its national identity on a silver platter.

For years, Moroccan patriots have warned of this looming threat. Now, as the streets and institutions of Morocco stand on the brink of Zionist appropriation, the writing is on the wall. If unchecked, this could mark the final betrayal — the moment Morocco loses its soul to the Zionist entity in exchange for a hollow alliance built on oppression, betrayal, and historical amnesia.
