𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓓𝓮𝓬𝓮𝓶𝓫𝓮𝓻 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 – The real news is not that Mohammed VI spends New Year’s outside Morocco, nor that he travels between Paris, the UAE, and Sharm El-Sheikh aboard royal aircraft—these have long become routine details in a style of governance that has relied more on absence than presence for years. The real, and troubling, development is that this absence is no longer circumstantial, personal, or health-related; it has become a permanent pattern in managing the affairs of a state facing compounded crises, conducted behind the scenes without accountability or transparency.
What is happening today in Morocco is not merely a “royal vacation,” but a politically sensitive moment that exposes the fragility of the existing Makhzen model. When the head of state is absent amid social unrest, rising living costs, and eroding public trust, the question is not merely ethical but constitutional and political: Who makes the decisions? Who is held accountable? Who bears responsibility?
More alarming than the absence itself are reports suggesting an unofficial transfer of power to the crown prince, outside any clear constitutional framework, within closed “Makhzen arrangements.” Here, we witness an authoritarian practice circumventing state logic and institutional norms, reproducing hereditary governance as a fait accompli rather than a constitutionally regulated choice. If power is indeed being transferred, it occurs in shadowed rooms, while the people remain the last to know.
This situation places Morocco in a dangerous paradox: externally marketed as a model of “stability,” while internally governed through opacity and guardianship. How can one speak of reforms or a “new developmental model” when the king is absent, the state silent, and politics ceded to security management and loyalty networks?
If the crown prince is effectively assuming power, it is not merely a personal matter but a sovereign issue. He is neither elected nor given popular mandate, and any exercise of authority in his name outside constitutional provisions constitutes a serious precedent, entrenching the idea that Morocco is governed not by laws but by Makhzenic balances.
Worse, this ambiguity coincides with a socially volatile reality: protests, unemployment, stark inequalities, and a growing sense of hopelessness, particularly among youth. In such moments, nations require a present, transparent leadership willing to confront the populace with truth and responsibility. Leaving the country in a state of “political suspension,” while power is exercised remotely, is not stability—it is a ticking time bomb.
Moroccans do not demand the impossible, nor the king’s intervention in everyday details. They demand the minimum: clarity. Who governs? Under what legitimacy? In which direction is the country heading? States cannot be run on rumors, reassured by ceremonial images, or constructed in the shadows.
The continuation of this state of affairs portends an increasingly ambiguous future, where the gap between governance and society widens, absence becomes the rule, accountability the exception, and authority a closed inheritance beyond the people’s influence. At such a juncture, the question is no longer merely: Where is the king? The far graver question is: Do Moroccans still have the right to know how their country is truly governed?
