Misinformed Trolls Twist Minister’s Defense of Algerian Heritage, Fueling a Misguided Campaign That Serves Foreign Agendas

Algiers, Algeria | June 16th, 2025 — In a display of what can only be described as orchestrated ignorance, a wave of digital hysteria has erupted in the wake of Algerian Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane’s response to a legitimate question raised during a plenary session of the Council of the Nation. The question, concerning the ongoing and deliberate plundering of Algeria’s cultural and artistic heritage by a neighboring state, deserved the serious and well-researched reply it received. Yet, in an era where social media noise often drowns out truth, that response was cynically manipulated by a digital mob driven by ulterior motives.

Rather than confronting the actual thieves of Algeria’s heritage—those behind a methodical campaign of appropriation targeting Algeria’s intangible and material cultural wealth—certain voices chose instead to ridicule the minister. Their intent was not to question policy constructively, but to distort his words, feeding the echo chambers of hostile media outlets and giving oxygen to foreign agendas aimed at undermining national unity.

Let us be clear: Minister Meziane was executing his constitutional duty by responding to a formal inquiry. He backed his statements with historical facts, referencing modern academic research and even citing the renowned French historian Denis Serre, who traced the origins of couscous to ancient Numidia—a civilization situated in what is now Algeria. Still, this did not deter the paid agitators of the virtual realm from launching a smear campaign, accusing the minister of trivializing national and international issues.

What these critics deliberately ignore is that the issue at hand—the ownership and defense of cultural heritage—is no less vital than territorial sovereignty. As President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stated: “Just as we fought a war for our independence, we now wage a cultural war to preserve our historical identity.”

It is laughable—and tragic—that the minister’s words, made two full days before any international military developments, were intentionally misinterpreted as an opportunistic distraction from global affairs. This is not only intellectually dishonest but suggests an alignment, witting or not, with the very same entities working to dilute Algeria’s cultural footprint on the world stage.

It is equally important to highlight the hypocrisy of those who now masquerade as patriots, yet have remained mute in the face of documented cultural thefts—be it the unauthorized adoption of Raï music by a neighboring state through the naturalization of one of its artists, or the shameless attempts to claim the legacy of the Andalusian-style zellige, the Constantine kaftan, and the Amazigh abzim.

The reality is stark: there exists a well-financed, coordinated effort to destabilize Algeria’s cultural narrative, and it is often amplified by domestic actors who, out of ignorance or ideological alignment, aid in that mission. These so-called commentators, who use the “blue space” of the internet as a megaphone for misinformation, care little for historical accuracy or national dignity.

Algerians, however, are not so easily deceived. They know the true nature of these attacks. They understand that what’s at stake is not merely a dish or a dress, but the very soul of a nation that withstood colonial erasure and now faces digital sabotage. They are aware that the current media assault seeks to diminish Algeria’s cultural sovereignty just as its colonial predecessors sought to erase it altogether.

In the end, this moment is not about a misunderstood comment or a viral headline. It is about defending Algeria’s cultural integrity against both external theft and internal betrayal. Those who join in the mockery of national institutions—especially at a time of renewed international threats and regional instability—must be seen for what they are: enablers of the very agendas they pretend to oppose.

To them, we say: the Algerian people are not a herd to be led astray by digital shepherds of foreign design. Their memory is long, their culture is rich, and their identity is not up for negotiation.
