Algiers, Algeria– Thursday, July 17, 2025 | In a move widely seen as a strategic realignment of the Ministry of Communication’s top administrative echelon, Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, officially installed Professor Slimane Laaredj as the new Secretary-General of the ministry on Thursday, replacing Mokhtar Khaldi whose duties have been terminated.

Professor Laaredj, an eminent academic in political science and international relations at the University of Algiers 3, currently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations. He is renowned not only for his academic gravitas but also for his influential contributions to national debates on strategic affairs, particularly in areas intersecting with national security, regional geopolitics, and media governance.

Laaredj’s intellectual trajectory is marked by deep engagement with Algeria’s strategic challenges. He has delivered several landmark lectures, including a notable intervention on February 23, 2021, titled “Challenges of National Security and Defence in Light of Regional Transformations,” presented before the Land Forces Command. Another impactful lecture in February 2022 dissected the influence of global and regional upheavals on national security, offering a sober, clear-eyed analysis grounded in geopolitical realism.

Beyond academia, Laaredj has earned national respect as a credible and competent political analyst whose views regularly feature in expert panels and high-level symposiums. His voice has become synonymous with calls for media responsibility and strategic clarity, aligning perfectly with the presidential vision of a “New Algeria.”

Significantly, Professor Laaredj chaired the Jury Committee of the President of the Republic’s Award for the Professional Journalist—an accolade representing the highest distinction within Algeria’s journalism sector. His tenure, especially during the sixth edition in 2020 under the theme “Digitalization: A Bridge to the New Algeria,” was marked by rigorous adherence to professionalism, transparency, and meritocracy in evaluating journalistic contributions.

His leadership of the committee was not symbolic but substantial, as it involved supervising one of Algeria’s most prestigious media juries, comprising representatives from ministerial departments, academia, media institutions, and regulatory bodies. Under his stewardship, the award criteria were firmly grounded in journalistic integrity, public interest, creativity, and relevance to national priorities.

Known for his insistence on the media’s institutional responsibility, Laaredj has persistently advocated for “embedding professional traditions in journalistic work” and for strengthening the media’s role as a pillar of nation-building. He has repeatedly emphasized that professionalism must be the cornerstone of media practice in the New Algeria, echoing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s institutional reform agenda.

Upon his installation, Minister Meziane praised Laaredj’s “remarkable expertise, institutional vision, and commitment to revamping the legal framework of the communication sector,” underscoring the need to keep pace with digital transformation and to elevate the strategic posture of Algerian media.

With this new appointment, Laaredj is expected to play a pivotal role in operationalizing Algeria’s public communication strategies. His mission includes steering the long-overdue reform of media legislation, rehabilitating the journalism profession, and reshaping the interface between state institutions and media professionals in a spirit of transparency and constructive engagement.
