Algeria’s ongoing commitment to improving the lives of its citizens through significant social and economic reforms continues to shape the nation’s future.

Algiers, Algeria | April 30th, 2025 —  As Algeria prepares to join the global community in celebrating International Workers’ Day on May 1st, the country takes pride not only in the historical significance of this occasion but also in its ongoing achievements in social welfare under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This article marks the second installment in a series highlighting Algeria’s substantial social gains in recent years, particularly those that benefit the working class and vulnerable segments of society.

Since assuming office on December 19, 2019, President Tebboune has made social justice the cornerstone of his presidency, ensuring that the rights and well-being of Algeria’s workers, retirees, and citizens are protected. One of the most notable actions in this regard was the unprecedented 47% increase in wages implemented in February 2023, a decision that significantly improved the purchasing power of the nation’s workers. The increase, which extends through 2024, marks a critical step towards the president’s long-term commitment to raising salaries by 100% by the end of his second term, which began in September 2024.

In parallel with the wage increases, President Tebboune has taken decisive steps to protect retirees, ensuring that no pension falls below the national minimum wage of 20,000 dinars. The removal of the Income Tax (IRG) for salaries under 30,000 dinars and the reduction of tax rates for higher salaries are further proof of his commitment to improving living standards.

The president’s commitment to social welfare extends to other key areas, including the public sector. Significant strides have been made in education and healthcare, with new policies enacted to improve conditions for workers in these fields. A newly introduced education sector status, alongside revisions to retirement ages for national educators, marks a pivotal shift in how the state values its teaching professionals. In the healthcare sector, the government has made impressive strides, including the opening of several new hospitals in 2025.

Furthermore, the issue of unemployment is not overlooked, as the government has introduced a comprehensive unemployment allowance aimed at supporting individuals as they search for stable employment. In this broader context of strengthening the national economy, President Tebboune has taken steps to control inflation and preserve citizens’ purchasing power. The government’s price capping policies have extended to a variety of staple goods, including coffee, potatoes, lamb, and bananas, in addition to the already-capped products such as sugar, edible oil, and flour.

Social housing has also been a major area of focus, with nearly two million new homes distributed in recent years. The state remains committed to furthering this initiative, with plans underway to build an additional two million homes during the current quinquennial period, as promised during the 2024 election campaign.

These advances in Algeria’s social welfare policies are a testament to President Tebboune’s broader vision for the country. His government continues to lay the foundation for an inclusive, equitable society where all Algerians can benefit from the fruits of the nation’s progress. The implementation of these policies has not only enhanced the quality of life for citizens but has also positioned Algeria as a leader in economic and social transformation within the region.

As we celebrate International Workers’ Day, it is clear that Algeria’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of its citizens—whether through wages, healthcare, housing, or unemployment benefits—remains a top priority for President Tebboune and his government.
