Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria has ushered in a new chapter in its communication sector with the appointment of Zoheir Bouamama as Minister of Communication, succeeding Mohamed Meziane. The handover ceremony, held on Monday in the presence of senior figures of national media institutions, marked more than a mere change in leadership; it signaled the reaffirmation of Algeria’s commitment to revitalizing its media landscape as part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s comprehensive vision for national renewal.
In his first address as minister, Bouamama expressed his “deep gratitude and profound respect” to the President of the Republic for entrusting him with what he described as “a vital and strategic sector at the very heart of national development.” He recalled the presidential approach that defines communication as a “fundamental pillar of state-building, citizen service, and the broader project of national rebirth.”
The new minister emphasized the urgent need to meet “growing and sometimes complex challenges” facing the Algerian media sphere, noting that the sector must accompany and adapt to “the profound transformations shaping both the national and international communication landscape.” In this regard, Bouamama underscored that “Algeria possesses a rich media legacy that must not only be preserved but also reformed and modernized to rise to the demands of the present era.”
He further insisted that strengthening the role of the media requires a bold embrace of digital transition, “to address existing dysfunctions and overcome structural shortcomings,” while reaffirming that “the reorganization of the sector to enhance its efficiency will rank among the top priorities.”
Outgoing minister Mohamed Meziane, for his part, thanked the Head of State for the confidence placed in him throughout his tenure, highlighting the honor of serving during a pivotal period for the sector.
Before his nomination, Zoheir Bouamama held the position of adviser to the President of the Republic on political affairs, civil society, youth, and party relations. An academic by training, he served as professor at the University of Algiers and associate lecturer at the University of Annaba. His appointment is seen as a signal of continuity combined with reformist intent, bridging Algeria’s media traditions with the imperatives of the digital age.
