Algiers – September 2025 – At the solemn inauguration of the fourth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), held this Thursday at the International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers, the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Keabetswe Mene, delivered a message of rare clarity and conviction: Algeria has always stood as a pillar of African solidarity and a driving force for the continent’s collective interests.
Expressing deep gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for hosting this landmark edition of the IATF, Mene lauded Algeria as “a nation with a rich past, which has consistently worked in favor of the interests of our continent.” His remarks reflected not only the historical depth of Algeria’s commitment to Africa, but also its growing role in shaping the continent’s economic future.
The AfCFTA chief underlined the exceptional expectations attached to the Algiers edition of the trade fair, predicting outcomes that would surpass those of previous gatherings. He highlighted Algeria’s capacity to galvanize African economies, particularly through the creation of jobs and the fostering of innovation for the continent’s burgeoning youth. “This ambition did not exist before this edition of the IATF,” Mene observed, stressing that Algiers would serve as the springboard for a renewed momentum toward a unified African market.
In a compelling call to action, he declared that Africa must now pivot from being an importer to becoming a producer across all sectors, underscoring the transformative potential of the AfCFTA. “Here in Algeria, we are laying the foundations for a trade and investment zone that will empower Africa to act in unity, to create a free market within our continental zone,” he stated.
Mene further emphasized the long-term vision of this continental shift: strengthening Africa’s infrastructure, creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people, prioritizing the African market in global trade dynamics, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and advancing renewable energies as a bulwark against climate change.
