Algeria Champions Clean Energy Transition at Osaka Expo 2025: Hydrogen and Alternative Fuels in Focus

Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria reaffirmed its determination to play a central role in the global transition to clean energy during its participation in two ministerial meetings on alternative fuels in transport and hydrogen, held on the sidelines of Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Representing the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, Miloud Medjelled, Director General of Foresight at the ministry, underscored Algeria’s strategy to position itself as a regional leader in sustainable energy solutions.
In his address at the ministerial session on alternative fuels, Medjelled emphasized that Algeria has already embarked on concrete measures to integrate cleaner technologies in the transport sector. Among them, he cited the adoption of e-methanol and liquefied natural gas (LNG), alongside the integration of dual-fuel diesel-electric (DFDE) propulsion technology into the national maritime fleet. These innovations, he stressed, are designed to reduce both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Algeria’s shipping industry.
The Algerian representative also highlighted ongoing preparations in Arzew and Skikda for state-of-the-art storage and supply facilities for clean fuels. These efforts, he noted, are integral to bolstering sustainable maritime transport infrastructure.
Turning to aviation, Medjelled unveiled a pilot project with Air Algérie aimed at producing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) locally. Derived from refinery residues and used oils, these fuels are expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions in line with Algeria’s international commitments, while laying the groundwork for a homegrown green aviation sector.
Medjelled reminded participants that the maritime and aviation industries, while vital to global commerce, account for nearly 7 percent of global CO₂ emissions, underscoring the urgency of accelerating the shift towards low-carbon alternatives.
At the ministerial meeting on hydrogen, Algeria reiterated the central role of hydrogen in its national energy transition strategy, structured around six strategic pillars. These include: establishing an integrated legal and institutional framework; developing expertise through universities and specialized institutes; fostering local industrial integration to produce equipment and master engineering capabilities; creating innovative financing mechanisms to attract investment; reinforcing international cooperation, notably through the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA) and the International Hydrogen Trade Forum (IHTF); and developing interconnection projects such as the South 2 Corridor, aimed at exporting green hydrogen to Europe.
Looking ahead, Medjelled revealed Algeria’s ambition to implement pilot projects capable of producing and exporting between 30 and 40 terawatt-hours of hydrogen and its derivatives by 2040, a target that could cover approximately 10 percent of Europe’s projected demand. This, he concluded, would cement Algeria’s role as a regional hub for clean energy and a driving force in the decarbonization of global transport.
