Algeria, India Deepen Strategic Cooperation in Hydrocarbons and Mines
By: Dr. Hana Saada
In a demonstration of the enduring diplomatic and economic ties between Algeria and India, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State for Hydrocarbons and Mines, received Neena Malhotra, Secretary of State at the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for cooperation with Global South countries, on Tuesday at the ministry’s headquarters.
The visit forms part of the seventh session of Algerian-Indian political consultations and was attended by both countries’ ambassadors, as well as senior officials including Karima Bakir Tafer, Secretary of State for Mines. The meeting highlighted the historical friendship and cooperative relationship binding the two nations, further strengthened following the state visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Algeria in October 2024 and her discussions with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
During the discussions, both parties explored avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation across hydrocarbons, mining, and seawater desalination. Minister Arkab outlined investment opportunities in Algeria’s hydrocarbon sector, inviting Indian companies to engage in projects spanning the entire value chain, from upstream exploration and production to infrastructure development and engineering.
Secretary Malhotra expressed India’s interest in expanding commercial collaboration with Sonatrach, particularly in the marketing of liquefied petroleum gas and petroleum products. The dialogue further extended to petrochemical production, fertilizers, phosphate processing, and mineral sector development, encompassing research, exploration, resource extraction, geological studies, mapping, and professional training.
Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to facilitating Indian participation in the development of new mining projects, while the Indian delegation reiterated its country’s interest in broadening cooperation, particularly in hydrocarbons and mines, and in the exchange of expertise and transfer of technology to strengthen the strategic partnership.
