Algeria–Libya Pharmaceutical Cooperation Strengthened: Saidal Revives Medicine Exports to the Libyan Market

Algiers – October 2025 – In a move that underscores Algeria’s renewed economic outreach in North Africa and its ambition to expand pharmaceutical diplomacy across the region, the public pharmaceutical group Saidal signed on Sunday a memorandum of understanding with the Libyan company Al-Lu’lu’a Al-Oula, marking the resumption of Algerian pharmaceutical exports to Libya.
The signing ceremony, held at Saidal’s headquarters in Algiers, was presided over by Mrs. Nabila Benyaghzer, Chairwoman and CEO of Saidal, and Mr. Akram Ali Ahmed Essaid, Director General of Al-Lu’lu’a Al-Oula. The event brought together senior executives and experts from both sides, highlighting the strategic nature of this agreement and its potential to elevate bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector.
According to the statement released by the group, this accord represents a new milestone in the development of Algerian–Libyan pharmaceutical cooperation. It not only facilitates the export of Algerian-manufactured medicines and medical products to the Libyan market but also sets a framework for technology transfer and the exchange of pharmaceutical expertise. The partnership aims to strengthen industrial capacities, enhance production autonomy, and promote sustainable development within both countries’ health systems.
Mrs. Benyaghzer emphasized that this agreement reflects Saidal’s strategic vision of regional expansion, aligning with Algeria’s broader economic policy to diversify exports beyond hydrocarbons and establish itself as a regional leader in pharmaceutical innovation. She underlined that Saidal’s reputation for quality, research, and regulatory compliance positions it as a trusted partner in building resilient health industries across Africa.
For his part, Mr. Essaid expressed Libya’s strong interest in revitalizing cooperation with Algerian partners, stressing that the agreement will not only ensure the availability of high-quality medicines in Libya but also pave the way for joint production ventures in the future. He added that the partnership constitutes “a vital step toward achieving medical self-sufficiency and reinforcing health security in the region.”
This initiative comes within the broader economic dynamic fostered by the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), a continental platform designed to accelerate intra-African commercial exchanges and industrial integration. The Algeria–Libya agreement thus embodies the spirit of South–South cooperation, reflecting a shared determination to build a competitive regional pharmaceutical ecosystem that supports both economic resilience and public health sovereignty.
