Pope Leo XIV at Djamaa El Djazair: Algeria Is “A Noble People Never Defeated by Hardship,” Calls Visit a Sign of Peace in a Fractured World
By Dr. Hana Saada
Delivered at the cultural centre of Djamaa El Djazair in Algiers, Pope Leo XIV set out a message centred on peace, mutual understanding, and the moral imperative of overcoming widening global divisions. His intervention, shaped by diplomatic symbolism and measured personal reflection, further defined the thematic arc of his visit to Algeria.
The Pope recalled that he had previously visited Annaba on two occasions, expressing clear satisfaction at returning to Algeria and describing his encounter with its people as one marked by deep appreciation. His reference to Annaba, historically associated with Saint Augustine, implicitly reaffirmed the civilisational depth embedded in the visit’s symbolic geography.
Positioning his presence within a broader global context, Pope Leo XIV said he wished the visit to stand as a “sign of peace” in a world increasingly marked by conflict and misunderstanding. The formulation placed Algeria within a wider moral register of international relations, beyond the confines of protocol diplomacy or bilateral engagement.
He added that simplicity of awareness in the contemporary world could open “many closed doors”, arguing that clarity, humility, and openness remain essential conditions for dialogue in an increasingly fragmented international environment. He described his visit as one undertaken in pursuit of peace.
A substantial portion of the address was devoted to Algeria itself, which he characterised as a nation whose people have never been defeated by hardship. He attributed this resilience to deeply rooted values of solidarity, generosity, and mutual support, presenting them as structural features of Algerian social cohesion.
He further stated that, across multiple encounters and contexts, he had consistently observed expressions of generosity, loyalty, and solidarity among Algerians, reinforcing a broader portrayal of the country as anchored in social cohesion and collective strength.
Reflecting on Algeria’s historical trajectory, Pope Leo XIV noted that its past experiences had endowed it with a particularly acute understanding of global affairs. He implied that this historical consciousness allows Algeria to interpret international developments through a lens shaped by struggle, memory, and transformation.
