President Tebboune Hosts Pope Leo XIV at Djamaa El Djazair in Algiers, Casting Algeria as a Bridge Between Civilisations and Calling for Greater Global Justice
By Dr. Hana Saada
In a highly symbolic diplomatic encounter at Djamaa El Djazair in Algiers, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune welcomed Pope Leo XIV in a meeting that underscored Algeria’s long-standing positioning as a crossroads of civilisations and a vocal advocate of dialogue, justice, and international cooperation.
Addressing the Pope in a formal statement, President Tebboune said it was his “pleasure, on behalf of Algeria—its people, government, and institutions—to welcome you to a land of ancient history and the meeting point of civilisations.” He framed the visit as one that encapsulates shared aspirations between Algeria and the Holy See across multiple dimensions of global concern.
The President highlighted the symbolic weight of the visit, noting that Pope Leo XIV was welcomed in a country that is historically associated with intellectual and spiritual heritage, describing Algeria as the land that gave birth to his “spiritual father,” Saint Augustine—one of the most influential figures in the history of human thought.
In the same historical register, Tebboune also invoked Emir Abdelkader, founder of the modern Algerian state, presenting both figures as enduring symbols of wisdom, tolerance, and humanism that continue to shape Algeria’s national identity and international outlook.
The President emphasised Algeria’s pride in this dual legacy, positioning it as a moral and intellectual foundation for its contemporary diplomatic posture. The country, he noted, remains deeply committed to social justice, a principle rooted in its own revolutionary history and its long struggle for independence.
Turning to contemporary global challenges, President Tebboune addressed issues of inequality and geopolitical instability, stating that Pope Leo XIV stands as a prominent advocate of social justice at a time when the divide between the global North and South continues to widen economically and socially.
He further praised the Pope’s vocal commitment to peace in a period marked by conflict and fragmentation, particularly highlighting crises affecting the Middle East. In this context, Tebboune expressed appreciation for the Pope’s courageous and humane stance on the tragedy in Gaza, which he said resonates deeply with Algeria’s own diplomatic and moral positions.
Reaffirming Algeria’s position, the President called for a unified international effort to ensure justice for the Palestinian people, including access to humanitarian relief and recognition of their inalienable right to statehood. He also extended this appeal to broader regional contexts, calling for peace, security, and stability in the Gulf and Lebanon.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of Algeria’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the Vatican in advancing dialogue over division, cooperation over confrontation, and coexistence over conflict. President Tebboune stressed that Algeria seeks to continue building bridges of understanding with the Holy See, particularly in promoting intercultural and interreligious engagement.
The encounter, held in a setting rich with historical and symbolic resonance, highlighted Algeria’s sustained effort to position itself as a stabilising voice within a fragmented international order—anchored not only in its geopolitical relevance, but also in its enduring historical depth, revolutionary legacy, and plural civilisational identity.
