Algeria Qualifies for the 2026 World Cup: The Desert Warriors Bound for the Americas
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – October 2025 – A new chapter in Algerian football history has been written. Twelve years after their last appearance on the world stage in Brazil, the Desert Warriors have officially secured their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their fifth qualification after 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014.
Under the roaring cheers of a jubilant crowd at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran, the Algerian national team stamped their authority with a commanding 3–0 victory over Somalia. The match, hosted in Algeria at the request of the Somali Football Federation due to the non-homologation of Mogadishu’s stadium by CAF and FIFA, turned into a triumphant celebration for the men in green.
From the outset, Vladimir Petković’s squad showed determination and clarity of purpose. The breakthrough came as early as the sixth minute when the ever-clinical Mohamed Amine Amoura capitalized on a precise assist from captain Riyad Mahrez, sending the ball past the Somali goalkeeper to ignite the stands. Barely thirteen minutes later, Mahrez himself doubled the lead with a spectacular left-footed strike that nestled perfectly into the top corner — a moment of sheer brilliance that left no doubt about Algeria’s superiority.
After the break, the unstoppable Amoura sealed the victory with a deft header in the 57th minute, once again assisted by Mahrez, bringing his tally to eight goals in the World Cup qualifiers. His consistency and finishing prowess have turned him into one of the most prolific strikers of the African qualifiers, symbolizing the new generation’s hunger and talent.
This decisive win sends the Greens to the 2026 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico — a monumental stage where Algeria will once again represent Africa with pride and ambition.
For Riyad Mahrez — one of the few remaining veterans from the 2014 squad — the qualification carries a special emotional weight, bridging two generations of Algerian football excellence. The team will now turn its focus to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025), with preparations set to begin on October 14 at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou. Their next and final qualifying encounter against Uganda will serve both as a formality and a test ahead of their continental aspirations.
