Political Activists Warn of Deepening Social, Economic Crisis in Morocco

They stressed the increasing number of citizens living below the poverty line and the persistent fragility of vital sectors.
In this context, Moroccan human rights advocate residing in Iceland, Mohamed Kandil, noted in a recent article the stark paradox between the image projected by the Moroccan regime internationally and the harsh living conditions experienced by citizens domestically. He pointed to the fragility of the education and healthcare systems, the deterioration of essential public services, and the erosion of freedoms alongside the absence of genuine social justice.
Kandil further criticized the state apparatus for prioritizing its own interests over those of the people, pursuing external alliances that compromise national sovereignty. He highlighted the massive sums spent to secure loyalties, while hospitals suffer neglect, schools face shortages, and public services continue to decline.
Meanwhile, Moroccan political activist Sara Benhabbache condemned what she described as the regimeโs deliberate misrepresentation of economic reality, citing manipulated statistics such as the reported decline in inflation during 2025 without contextualizing it within the actual economic environment.
Benhabbache emphasized the dramatic rise in living costs, particularly in food, energy, and transportation, against stagnant wages. She also denounced forced evictions and demolitions of citizensโ homes, carried out verbally under harsh climatic conditions.
The activist underscored that any meaningful development cannot be achieved through the displacement of vulnerable populations or the erasure of historical community memory, asserting that current policies are exacerbating the social crisis rather than addressing it.
