Algeria, Tunisia Conduct Joint Wildfire Response Drill to Boost Cross-Border Emergency Readiness

Algiers, Algeria | May 31st, 2025 — In a demonstration of regional solidarity and cross-border emergency preparedness, Algeria and Tunisia have carried out a joint firefighting drill aimed at combating wildfires, one of the most pressing environmental and security challenges in North Africa.

The exercise was conducted in the “Safaia Forest” area in the municipality of Kef, near Sakiet Sidi Youssef, close to the Algerian-Tunisian border. Spearheaded by the Algerian Civil Protection Directorate General and its Tunisian counterpart, the manoeuvre is part of a broader bilateral cooperation framework focused on forest fire prevention and response.

According to a statement from the Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC), the operation falls within the scope of “ongoing efforts to prevent and mitigate wildfire risks, which pose a serious threat to environmental integrity and the safety of local populations.” The initiative further aims to assess operational readiness, improve coordination, exchange best practices, and boost the effectiveness of joint interventions during wildfire emergencies.

The drill mobilized substantial human and logistical resources, including two elite Algerian Civil Protection teams specialized in forest fire suppression, alongside advanced command, coordination, and communication systems. These strategic resources allowed both nations to test and refine their response protocols and ensure compatibility of field operations across borders.

The simulation also served as a practical testbed for harmonized crisis management procedures, while enabling responders to optimize joint deployments and sharpen decision-making under real-world conditions. Authorities emphasized that the training significantly enhances the resilience and adaptability of both countries in facing increasingly frequent natural disasters fueled by climate change.

This collaborative exercise reflects the shared will of Algeria and Tunisia to deepen ties in civil protection, foster mutual learning, and implement bilateral commitments in line with the vision of both nations’ highest leadership. It stands as a concrete example of operationalizing their joint agreement to develop a common system for wildfire prevention, early warning, and emergency intervention.

The two countries have also intensified their cooperation through reciprocal visits, training exchanges, and expert missions—all geared towards strengthening dialogue, coordination, and preparedness in managing disasters and associated risks.
