Algeria, Tunisia Deepen Strategic Energy and Mining Cooperation
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria and Tunisia are charting a new course in regional energy and mineral collaboration, underscoring a shared ambition to strengthen bilateral ties and accelerate strategic projects across hydrocarbons, electricity, and renewable energy sectors. This Wednesday, Minister of State for Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Tunisia’s Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, hosted Imed Derbali, President of the National Council of Regions and Districts of Tunisia, in Algiers, leading a high-level parliamentary delegation.
The meeting, attended by key officials including Algeria’s Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, and the Vice-President of the Council of the Nation, Rabah Boughali, focused on reviewing the current state of bilateral cooperation and exploring avenues for deeper integration. Both nations reaffirmed their historic and robust relations, with a strong commitment to expand collaboration in hydrocarbon production and commercialization, electricity generation and transmission, and the transition toward clean and renewable energy sources.
Central to the discussions was the advancement of joint projects, most notably the Algeria–Tunisia electricity interconnection, a strategic initiative that promises to enhance energy security and facilitate the regional exchange of power. Beyond energy, the talks also encompassed mining sector cooperation, with particular attention to phosphate extraction and processing, as well as the sharing of technical expertise and workforce training. These measures are designed to ensure that both nations derive maximum economic and technological value from their natural resources.
The ministers presented comprehensive development roadmaps for their respective sectors, highlighting ongoing programs and planned initiatives. They collectively emphasized their readiness to consolidate institutional collaboration and promote sustained cooperation, reflecting a political vision aimed at establishing a durable and mutually beneficial economic partnership. This trajectory aligns with the broader strategic objectives of both governments: to foster innovation, optimize resource management, and create a framework for shared growth and industrial advancement.
