French Police Intervene Following Onboard Dispute; Algerian Embassy Steps In to Secure His Release

Algiers, Algeria | July 2nd, 2025 — Algerian international footballer Youcef Belaïli was released on Wednesday evening by French police at Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport, along with his brother, after a brief detention that followed an incident aboard an Air France flight. The release came after swift diplomatic intervention by the Algerian Embassy in France.

The 33-year-old winger had been returning from the United States after participating in the FIFA Club World Cup with Espérance de Tunis. He was traveling with his wife, son, and brother aboard the Air France flight from New York to Paris. According to preliminary reports, a verbal dispute escalated between Belaïli and the flight crew, over his refusal to comply with safety instructions regarding his son’s seatbelt.

Upon arrival in Paris, French law enforcement detained both Belaïli and his brother Fares at the airport. Video footage recorded by passengers captured the moment police escorted them away, causing widespread reaction on social media and in Algerian sports circles.

Acting swiftly, the Algerian Embassy in Paris contacted the relevant French authorities to clarify the circumstances and assert the rights of the Algerian nationals. Following the intervention, both Youcef and Fares Belaïli were released without charges. As of this writing, Belaïli, his wife, his son, and his brother are safe and in good condition.

No official statements have yet been issued by Air France or Espérance de Tunis regarding the event.
