Algeria’s First National Skills Olympiad Marks Strategic Leap in Professional Training Reform

Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria inaugurated a new chapter in the modernization of its professional training system with the launch of the first National Skills Olympiad in Oran—an event that Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb described as a decisive turning point and a crowning achievement of Algeria’s accession this year to WorldSkills Africa. Held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, the competition signals the country’s determination to elevate vocational training to the rank of a strategic driver of national development.
In his opening address, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb emphasized that the organization of this inaugural Olympiad comes as part of a broader national vision mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who called for a comprehensive strategic roadmap to transform the vocational training and education sector into a genuine locomotive of economic and social progress. Algeria’s membership in WorldSkills Africa, he underscored, is not a symbolic gesture but a direct extension of this transformative vision—one that seeks integration into continental and global standards of excellence.
The Prime Minister noted that upgrading the mechanisms, institutions and pedagogical frameworks of professional training has become a central priority of government action over the past years. Success in today’s world, he insisted, no longer rests solely on theoretical knowledge but requires mastery of practical skills, creativity, innovation, and the agility to keep pace with rapid technological change. These principles now lie at the heart of Algeria’s educational and professional development agenda.
Ghrieb affirmed that the ultimate goal of this strategic orientation is to mobilize all available capacities, optimize their use, and provide young Algerians with the qualifications they need to become key contributors to the future of the national economy. Investing in human capital, he said, is the surest path to achieving sustainable development and building a competitive, knowledge-driven economy.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the exceptional symbolic and practical importance of the event itself. “These Olympiads,” he declared, “constitute a space of excellence and mastery, a laboratory for forming champions, and an environment conducive to the exchange of experiences and knowledge among young people from across the nation.” As Algeria hosts this pioneering edition, it positions itself as a regional leader committed to establishing new standards in vocational training, skill development, and youth empowerment.
