Andrea Stegher: Algeria Emerges as a Leader in Liquefied Natural Gas
By: Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria has firmly established itself as a leading force in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, according to Andrea Stegher, President of the International Gas Union, who addressed the first strategic session of the 8th Symposium of the Algerian Gas Industry in Oran on Monday. The symposium, convened under the theme “Natural Gas and Hydrogen: Innovation in Service of a Sustainable Industry,” brought together over 700 participants, including energy experts, industry leaders, international companies, and representatives from Sonatrach and Sonelgaz subsidiaries.
In his address, Stegher emphasized that Algerian gas experts have long recognized that gas is not merely an energy source, but a tool serving populations and a critical component in achieving sustainability. He highlighted the sector’s centrality in meeting current consumer needs while ensuring energy access for future generations—a vision shared by both industry actors and consumers, who regard gas as a reliable and viable energy option.
Stegher further noted the rising energy demand driven by artificial intelligence and data centers. He asserted that, while transitioning to renewable sources, gas remains an indispensable solution in the near term, offering both reliability and stability in energy supply. He called for continued investment and timely development of infrastructure to meet evolving demands and maintain sectoral resilience.
Innovation, Stegher stressed, is central to the gas industry. He highlighted ongoing technological advancements across conventional and low-emission systems, alongside growing integration of digitalization and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Knowledge sharing and best practice exchange, he added, are foundational to the International Gas Union’s mission and will remain a focal point of the upcoming GRC 2027 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
Acknowledging Algeria’s contributions, Stegher praised the country’s sustained partnerships and long-term investments, which have fostered confidence, innovation, and regional development. He underscored the strategic value of Algeria’s gas infrastructure, built over decades, as a pillar supporting future energy scenarios. Concluding, he noted, “Within the International Gas Union, we represent a community of engineers, operators, entrepreneurs, and innovators united by a shared goal: to achieve a responsible, sustainable, and affordable energy transition,” highlighting the necessity of political support, concrete climate action, and continued investment to meet global energy growth.
