Attaf Receives Ethiopian Counterpart to Boost Bilateral Ties and Address African Challenges

Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 30, 2025 | In a new step affirming Algeria’s strategic diplomatic engagement across the African continent, Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, received his Ethiopian counterpart, Gedion Timothewos, on Wednesday during an official visit to Algeria. The high-level meeting was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers, as confirmed by an official communiqué from the ministry.
This bilateral encounter served as an opportunity to assess the current status of Algerian-Ethiopian relations and examine concrete pathways for reinforcing their already positive trajectory. Central to the discussions was the follow-up on the implementation of the outcomes of the 5th session of the Algerian-Ethiopian Intergovernmental Commission, which convened last April in Addis Ababa.
According to the same communiqué, both ministers reviewed joint initiatives aimed at enhancing economic cooperation, political coordination, and multilateral diplomacy within African frameworks. The two top diplomats also exchanged views on several pressing issues listed on the African Union’s agenda. Of particular concern were the ongoing instability in the Sahel-Saharan region and the growing geopolitical challenges in the Horn of Africa.
The meeting underscored a mutual commitment to strengthening regional integration, deepening inter-African solidarity, and promoting sustainable development through shared strategic vision. It also reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for African unity and the peaceful resolution of conflicts through African-led mechanisms.
