AU Deputy Chairperson Haddadi Meets WHO Africa Regional Director to Advance Strategic Health Partnership

Algiers, Algeria | In a meeting that underscored the urgency of coordinated action to address Africa’s pressing health challenges, African Union (AU) Deputy Chairperson Salma Malika Haddadi received on Friday the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohamed Yacoub Jannabi, to explore avenues for strengthening the strategic partnership between the two institutions.

According to an official statement published on the AU’s website, discussions focused on “ways to consolidate cooperation between the African Union and the WHO,” culminating in a mutual agreement to develop “a joint action plan within the framework of Africa’s health agenda.”

Reaffirming the AU Commission’s commitment to robust collaboration, Haddadi stressed the importance of “deepening strategic cooperation under the existing Memorandum of Understanding to effectively respond to the continent’s health priorities.”

For his part, Professor Jannabi, a Tanzanian cardiology specialist, expressed his appreciation for what he described on his official social media accounts as a “fruitful” meeting dedicated to fostering convergence around regional health priorities. He emphasised the WHO Africa Regional Office’s high regard for its long-standing partnership with the AU, voicing a clear intent to sustain and intensify joint efforts in the years ahead.
