Cooperation: Algerian Energy Minister Arkab Meets with Tunisian Counterpart

Algiers, Algeria | May 17, 2024 — Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, held discussions in Sorrento, Italy, with the Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Ms. Fatma Eltabeb Chebboub. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 3rd edition of the International Forum “Towards the South: The European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic, and Sociocultural Era in the Mediterranean,” held under the auspices of the Italian government on May 17 and 18 in Sorrento.

The meeting was attended by the CEO of Sonatrach, Mr. Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Sonelgaz, Mr. Mourad Adjal, and senior officials from the ministry.

Discussions between the two ministers focused on the state of bilateral cooperation in the energy and mining sectors, which were described as “historical and profound.” They explored ways to strengthen and develop these relations, particularly in the areas of hydrocarbon production and commercialization, electricity production and transport, as well as new and renewable energies and energy transition.

Both parties also reviewed the progress and development of current projects and contracts in the gas and electricity sectors, and discussed future cooperation opportunities, especially in the mining sector, focusing on the exploitation and processing of phosphate products, and the exchange of expertise and training. In this context, they addressed the ongoing preparations for the Algerian-Tunisian bilateral energy and mining commission meeting, scheduled to be held in Tunis later this year.
