ALGIERS- During a press briefing, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf discussed the recent consultative meeting held in Tunis, which brought together President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria, President Kais Saied of Tunisia, and President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younes El-Menfi.
Attaf characterized this inaugural meeting as successful, highlighting its positive outcomes, particularly in the political domain.
Emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the Tunis Summit, Attaf underscored the warm, transparent, and candid discussions among the leaders of the three sisterly countries. The final communiqué addressed four key issues affecting the citizens of these nations: the development of border regions, energy, food security, and the removal of trade barriers. These priorities constitute a common action agenda among the three countries in anticipation of the upcoming summit scheduled to take place in Tripoli in three months.
Attaf clarified that the consultative meeting was not intended to replace the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) nor was it directed against any party. He reaffirmed that the UMA remained a historical project and objective, with consultations open to all parties if there is political intention and willingness.
The idea for the consultative meeting had been under discussion for some time, with President Tebboune initiating it during discussions with Maghreb Arab leaders and foreign ministers during their visits to Algeria.
Attaf stressed the necessity of establishing a mechanism for regional consultation to ensure the region’s voice is heard on international and regional platforms. This was particularly pertinent given the current international developments concerning the Libyan and Sahel-Saharan regions, where external parties often dominate discussions.
In conclusion, Attaf emphasized the importance of coordinating with neighboring countries, considering them as part of the same family, and reiterated Algeria’s commitment to representing the views and interests of the Maghreb Arab region, especially as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
