IATF-2025: Former Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou Hails President Tebboune’s Pioneering Role in Africa’s Economic Renaissance

Algiers – September 2025 – In a resonant tribute to Algeria’s rising stature on the continental stage, former President of Niger Mahamadou Issoufou on Thursday lauded President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his pioneering leadership in steering Africa toward economic emancipation and sustainable growth. His remarks came during a high-level panel at the opening of the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF-2025), held at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center from 4–10 September.
Issoufou, widely recognized as an architect of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), stressed that Algeria under President Tebboune has succeeded in carving out a privileged position in Africa’s economic landscape. “Algeria has emerged as the continent’s third-largest economy, assuming a leadership role and establishing itself as a pivotal state in fostering integration and economic openness,” he declared to a rapt audience of policymakers, business leaders, and continental stakeholders.
The former Nigerien leader underscored that Algeria’s trajectory reflects both continuity and transformation. “Algeria was, and remains, the Mecca of revolutionaries and liberation movements. Today, it stands as a pivot of economic integration and openness,” he said, emphasizing the country’s dual legacy of political solidarity and economic leadership.
Issoufou called upon African nations to mobilize their vast resources and leverage their agricultural potential as a pathway to self-sufficiency and independence from external dependency. He insisted that intra-African trade and investment must serve as the cornerstone of the continent’s long-term growth strategy, enabling Africa to claim its rightful place in the global economy.
President Tebboune, in turn, seized the occasion to acknowledge Issoufou’s stature, describing him as “a seasoned militant and a staunch defender of Africa and the AfCFTA.” Tebboune added that each encounter with Issoufou deepens his understanding of the continent: “I always seize the opportunity to know Africa better through him.”
