ALGIERS- Speaking on Monday in Rome at the opening of the Italy-Africa summit, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s representative and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, emphasized the importance of the partnership between Italy and African countries, particularly in terms of economic development and infrastructure.
“At the heart of our continent, basic infrastructure is sorely lacking, hindering economic development by 2%, along with a productivity drop of nearly 40%. Most studies demonstrate the link between weak foreign investments and basic infrastructure in Africa, where the road network covers only 25% of its territory,” stated the national diplomatic chief.
Attaf also called for funding projects to establish new infrastructure in Africa: “The problem of insufficient funding for infrastructure projects remains a major obstacle for African countries, facing an estimated shortage of $130 to $170 billion, according to the African Union’s estimates,” he declared. He further advocated for the implementation of an ‘integrated vision’ for existing infrastructure.
According to Attaf, this approach lies at the core of Algeria’s approach since its independence: “Algeria has mobilized significant resources to realize structural projects that will benefit the African continent. Projects such as the trans-Saharan road and the trans-Saharan gas pipeline, in addition to the road linking Algeria to Mauritania and the optic fiber project. The realization of these projects aims to create a direct link between the countries of the Maghreb and West Africa,” he emphasized.
