Algiers, Algeria | June 1st, 2025 — Algeria marked International Children’s Day on June 1 with a vibrant national celebration that blended cultural richness, playful spirit, and solemn commitment to the rights and protection of children. Across the country, and especially in the capital Algiers, parks, public spaces, and cultural venues came alive with music, laughter, competitions, and workshops, reinforcing not only the innocence of childhood but the state’s growing engagement in securing a safe, creative, and dignified environment for its youngest citizens.

The event, observed annually, unfolded under the watchful coordination of ministries, civic associations, and youth organizations, reflecting a coordinated national approach to child development and protection, grounded in Algeria’s legal and institutional frameworks.

This year’s celebrations stood out for their scale and the message they carried: that children are not only the future of the nation but a living priority of its present.

From Scouting Spirit to Creative Expression: An Immersive Day in Algiers

In the heart of the capital, the “Green Paradise” forest in El Madania became a playground of dreams as children engaged in traditional games, scouting competitions, drawing workshops, and interactive cultural activities. The event was animated by multiple associations focused on children’s rights and development, along with scouting troops from the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA), most notably the dynamic Ilyas Driche Troop, which organized a remarkable children’s games festival.

Speaking to Echorouk, Nacereddine Bencheikh, Deputy Scout Leader of the Ilyas Driche Troop, shared insights into the spirit behind the activities:

“The games were designed by our advanced girl scouts aged between 13 and 16. They unleashed their creativity to craft challenges that foster team spirit, personal initiative, and a sense of responsibility—values that scouting seeks to instill in future generations.”

The festival coincided with World Scout Day (May 27), prompting the troop to hold an exhibition to showcase traditional scouting practices and values. The troop adapted various scouting exercises for all children present, creating a rich and inclusive environment of discovery and fun.

A Celebration of Artistic Freedom and Friendship

Children also explored the world of imagination through painting workshops, where they let their creativity roam free, drawing nature, dreams, and visions of joy. Their artistic achievements were later recognized in an award ceremony that celebrated not only talent but the courage to express and share.

The day ended on a high note with a hilarious and heartwarming performance by a professional clown, whose humor, impersonations, songs, and spontaneous interaction with the children drew waves of laughter from the crowd. The session created lasting memories and friendships, bringing together children from diverse backgrounds in a spirit of joy and unity.

A National Vision for a Protected and Thriving Childhood

On this special occasion, Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs, Soraya Mouloudji, emphasized Algeria’s resolute commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and wellbeing.

“Algeria has made significant progress in child protection at all levels, thanks to the forward-looking leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who continuously affirms the imperative of ensuring children’s safety, interest, access to quality healthcare, and education,” Mouloudji declared.

She also highlighted the ongoing multi-sectoral collaboration with civil society and the National Body for the Protection and Promotion of Childhood, aimed at eradicating violence and abuse against children through awareness campaigns, prevention programs, and institutional support.

“Our sector works hand in hand with organizations devoted to children’s welfare and family stability to secure a childhood that is safe, balanced, and grounded in national values and human ethics,” Mouloudji added. “The special attention the state places on children is reflected in a strong legal arsenal, national programs, and on-the-ground mechanisms designed to offer effective care and protection.”

The event also witnessed the presence of numerous government ministers and officials, a symbolic gesture of the Algerian state’s institutional and political will to place childhood protection and rights at the core of national priorities.

With a mix of joy, unity, and national pride, this year’s International Children’s Day in Algeria was more than a celebration — it was a resounding reaffirmation of the country’s pledge to nurture, protect, and empower its children, ensuring they grow into responsible, creative, and free-thinking citizens of tomorrow.
