“KOTAMA AGRI FOOD: A Pillar of Algeria’s Food Sovereignty” — Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb

Algiers – September 2025 – Jijel bore witness on Monday to a landmark moment in Algeria’s industrial and agricultural transformation, as Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, acting on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, inaugurated the state-of-the-art oilseed crushing complex “KOTAMA AGRI FOOD.” This ambitious project is not merely an industrial milestone but a national statement of intent: Algeria is firmly charting its course towards food sovereignty and economic self-reliance.
Accompanied by Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, Industry Minister Yahia Bachir, and the local authorities of Jijel, the Prime Minister launched operations at Unit 15 of the complex, before moving to Unit 16 to inaugurate the group’s headquarters and inspect the data center, where he was briefed extensively on the scope and capacities of this industrial powerhouse.
According to Abdelali Ferhati, Director General of KOTAMA AGRI FOOD, the complex represents a “tremendous challenge” successfully met. With a crushing capacity ranging between 5,000 and 6,000 tonnes per day, the facility is designed to yield two critical outputs: crude soybean oil and high-quality livestock feed. Its significance cannot be overstated—covering more than 20% of the national demand for crude oil and over 80% of the country’s needs in animal feed. This is a decisive stride in reducing dependence on imports and fortifying Algeria’s strategic autonomy.
The socioeconomic implications are equally profound. The first operational phase alone has generated more than 350 direct jobs, expected to rise beyond 400 once the plant reaches full productivity, alongside the creation of up to 2,000 indirect jobs in the region. In a province long viewed as a critical node in Algeria’s development map, this investment injects new momentum into local growth, bridging national objectives with regional empowerment.
Charaf-Eddine Amara, CEO of Madar Holding—the driving force behind the project—underscored the role of presidential vision and trust in bringing this complex to life within a record two years. He saluted President Tebboune’s unwavering support, noting that “this project embodies one of the edifices of the New Algeria. It is both a responsibility and a testament to the capabilities of our national expertise, which has once again proven its resilience and determination to overcome challenges.”
As Ghrieb continued his working visit to Jijel, he inspected the second phase of the container terminal project at the Port of Djen Djen, one of the Mediterranean’s largest maritime gateways and a logistical artery for Algeria’s export ambitions. Together, these projects form part of a coherent strategy—positioning Algeria not only as a self-sufficient nation in vital sectors like food and energy but also as a regional hub for trade and production.
