Algiers – November 2025 – Algerian national team coach Madjid Bougherra has broken his silence regarding the ongoing speculation surrounding Youcef Belaïli’s omission from the latest squad list, offering a composed yet firm clarification on the matter. Speaking during a press conference held on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki, Bougherra emphasized that Belaïli’s absence should not be interpreted as exclusion but rather as part of a broader strategic vision for the national teams.
“Belaïli is fully capable of playing in the Africa Cup of Nations with the first team, which is why he has not been called up for now,” Bougherra stated, adding that the talented winger remains an integral figure in Algeria’s football landscape. “In my view, Belaïli is not absent. He can participate in the CAN with the main team, and players of his calibre are indispensable to the senior squad,” he insisted, highlighting both the player’s technical brilliance and his experience on the continental stage.
Addressing questions about the inclusion of older players such as Islam Slimani and Ryad Boudebouz in the A’ selection, Bougherra explained that their presence was motivated by the specific requirements of the upcoming Arab Cup, a competition that demands not only skill but also leadership and mental fortitude. “This type of tournament calls for experienced players with strong character and tactical maturity capable of guiding and motivating the younger ones,” he clarified.
