High-level talks in Algiers underscore Algeria’s leadership in regional integration, energy transition, and sustainable development across Africa

Algiers, Algeria | May 20th, 2025 — In a move toward consolidating regional cooperation and accelerating sustainable development across the African continent, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, received on Tuesday Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), accompanied by a high-level delegation.

 

This high-profile meeting provided a strategic platform to reinforce bilateral cooperation between Algeria and the African Development Bank in key priority areas — namely energy, mining, energy transition, and African regional integration.

During the talks, Minister Arkab delivered a comprehensive presentation on Algeria’s major development programs currently underway in the energy and mining sectors. These include the exploration and transformation of hydrocarbons, electricity transport and distribution infrastructure, valorization of mineral resources, and the execution of structural mining projects — with particular emphasis on phosphate exploitation and processing. He also highlighted Algeria’s ambitious agenda for renewable energy, including green hydrogen, seawater desalination initiatives, and regional electrical interconnection projects with neighboring African nations.

Emphasizing the imperative of intra-African cooperation, Arkab called for enhanced energy production and interconnection capacities to ensure the continent’s energy security, while supporting balanced and inclusive development. He reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to African integration, underlining its readiness to share decades-long expertise in exploration, industrialization, and capacity building. These contributions aim to strengthen Africa’s energy sovereignty and fulfill the aspirations of its people for stability and prosperity.

For his part, AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina hailed Algeria’s development vision, commending the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He expressed admiration for the country’s notable advances in multiple economic and social sectors and reaffirmed Algeria’s pivotal role on the African stage.

Dr. Adesina stressed the AfDB’s full commitment to supporting Algeria’s large-scale projects, notably the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), which he described as strategic for energy security and socioeconomic development in the regions it connects. He also conveyed the Bank’s strong interest in the phosphate sector, particularly in fertilizer production and commercialization, which he recognized as vital for bolstering agriculture and achieving food security across Africa.
